1kyle
Query with SS transfer to Hi-MD @ 352.Assuming you start with WAV in your library does the new 352 kbs transfer option really transfer at that rate or is it a "Fake" / Pseudo Hi-SP @ 256.Looking at the file properties on the MD itself it definitely says 352 kbs and the file size is somewhat larger than that transferred @ 256 (albeit not by a HUGE amount).I'm curious to know if this is REAL data or just padding as in the case of using SS to create legacy SP on the older formats.Actually playback into a decent piece of gear from a Computer (laptop) audigy 2 ZS card (optical out) to the optical in on the Hi-Fi gear gives a pretty impressive sound -- I'd be really hard pushed to tell the difference between the MD and the CD original.Cheers-K
The Low Volta
The real question you should ask yourself is: why would it be faked?there really is no point to that... SP is an exisiting ATRAC bitrate that can't won't be 'computerised' for some reason... 352 is new, A3+ and isn't 'needed' by any hardware... the only reason to fake it is for Sony to make us think we gained a higher bitrate while in reality we didn't, but 1) would Sony be that cynical? (ok, perhaps they would be ) 2) why? we got PCM (the 'top') already so why not really give a higher birate than 256?so concisely: yes I think it is real but I haven't checked it... as I really do not feel any doubt about it honestly
1kyle
Thanks --your answer makes sense.Actually the 352 sounds very good indeed --excellent compromise if you just want decent music playback.PCM still rules for libe recording however.Glad also about the new 3rd gen unit --looks great as well.Cheers-K
KrazyIvan
What I don't understand is why Sony did not make all the new bit rates recently released available when Hi-MD first launched. Apparently they were there all along. Sure I can't record them directly on my NHF800 but I can transfer them via SS and they are playable without a firmware update. So the ability to play them had to be on my unit all along. I guess I can't complain though. What if everything is fake?
Sparky191
I think 352kps sounds a tiny bit better than SP or HiSP. You'd need good speakers/Headphones to really notice it.
