cherok Posted March 15, 2006 Report Share Posted March 15, 2006 Hi folks, I like the board hereI have a question regarding SonicStage's need to categorize files according to their artist, genere whatever instead of just accepting the folders that you have designated those files to. Many artists, especially complilation albums and soundtracks are forced into seperate categories making the transfer of certain full albums next to impossible to locate.Any way to change this folks? I've been through what seems like the entire preferences menu. This makes me want to, A) Go back to the OMG Jukebox version .001, or buy an MP3 device that actually lets me make up my own mind.Thanks! Jimbolico Posted March 17, 2006 Report Share Posted March 17, 2006 (edited) The software won't let you choose sort method, like ANY other piece of software would...It does however permit 'Playlists'. I would recommend making playlists from the start, the songs you like in the order you like. I'm randomized playback anyway so ordering alpabetically makes sense for me, easy to find specifics that way.Entire playlists are transferable to the device and that makes it convenient to switch genres / moods when using the device, playlists can be called up individually or as multiples and randomized.Alphabetical sorting is almost manual with the software, and that limitation should be addressed or dealt with as a workflow. It's possible to insert tracks where ever in the playlist you prefer, beginning, end, alphabetical. The Library itself needs to be sorted by selectable means. Just my opinion. To remove the categorization of the library, I removed all the tags and converted mp3s to wav files, no tags, no categories, but long file names instead since it's all one long list. Sort by album title [i.e. compilations sort by their name] then select all the tracks in the compilation.. right-click the selected list and hit "properties" .. there is a check-box in the properties for "compilation". After that, the album will sort its tracks under the album name and end up under "various artists" or uncategorised at the very bottom of the SS artist/album list.Incidentally, most other player software works the same way, and the "various artists" tag does transfer between most of them [such as foobar200, winamp, SS, and iTunes]. In other words, SonicStage is classical music un-friendly. There is no way to sort by composer, so if for example I want to create a Hi-MD of the complete works of Samuel Barber, I have to hunt through My Library and find them. But in order for this to work, you must have "all tracks" view enabled.Thanks, it took me another few moments to find that, as I had all along been trying to activate that column when sorting by Album/Playlist. I guess, though, that in order to get to where I want (sort by composer but still keep tracks grouped into their respective albums), I have to create a playlist for each composer.
