Shreadhead
I am new around here and just found the forum.I have no one around here that is using the format that I can get info from and the only shop that has thenew format MD`s is my local Guitar Center. They know NOTHING about the units so here goes---.I have several earlier Min-Disc units (listed in my sig )will I still be able to use them if I go with the new format? Does the MZ-NH700 record in the old format so I can use what I have in my home decks if I want? What I use my MD mostly for is live recording when I am playing out with a band . I normaly don`t use more time than an 80 Min disk. I then label and store the disk for future referance or down load to my PC in real time using my optical out for a homemade CD of the performance. What would be the advantages/disadvantages of going to Hi-MD for me ?? Edited March 24, 2006 by Shreadhead
greenmachine
Increased quality (PCM recording possible, digital upload), quantity (more efficient re-formatting of standard MDs, can use 1GB Hi-MDs) and comfort (faster than realtime USB up-/download). First generation Hi-MD units like the NH700 can record in the old modes for backwards-compatibility, but these cannot be uploaded to PC. That is the one issue I had that was preventing me from jumping on the NH700. I have HUNDREDS of discs recorded, 2 home decks two portable recorders and a portable player. It makes no sense to scrap the whole system I have to go with a new format that isn't compatible with anything I have considering the long term survival questions on the overall MD foremat. No one I have talked to locally could answer that question. I will probably go for the HN700 knowing this now thanks.
The Low Volta
just wait a bit for the RH1 this will record into and upload the old (SP, LP2) modes as well as HiMD (as far as we know)

I ordered a NH700 today on-line from Minidisco. At $149 + shipping it was a STEAL and I don't think I will go wrong!! Thanks for the advice guys I`ll check out the new RH-1 a little later but needed something NOW !
A440
You can use the NH700 to record in SP--use format MD (not Hi-MD) and Rec Mode as SP. That will be compatible with your old units. Then shell out the $$$ for an RH1 when you want to upload your new and old SP recordings to computer. Or you can use the NH700 to record in Hi-SP or (max quality) PCM, upload those to your computer, and download from computer via SonicStage in an SP mode (not actual SP, but passable) to MDs that will play on your old units. That sounds like a plan. I had my MZ-R37 stolen a few weeks ago from the Church Sound Desk and the MZ-R70 I have doesn`t sound as good on the recordings (BIG time clipping the pre maybe using the RS Atten on the mic imput will help for tomorrow ). I needed a reliable solution in the short term that was compatible to what I had but that still gave me access to the new format to try so I jumped . greenmachine
The R70 and R700 lack a low sensitivity mic setting iirc, so this should be the reason why it's hard to avoid clipping with these units.
