hey all...

got a strange one here:

I have had some problems with my MZ-NH600D lately.

I got it as a Christmas gift back in 2004 (about a month after it came here in Vancouver BC Canada) and it worked beautifuly!!!

then over the next year i noticed it started to take longer to scan the disc when a new one was inserted. what ever. no biggie. then one day i was alking home from work and the player stopped playing altogther. I looked at the LCD screen and instead of it displaying Hi-MD (flashing) it now was flashing Hi-SP and the disc restarted itself from the very beginning. No worries, I thought. Maybe a glitch in the recording...then it started happening to all my old SP MD's, Net MD's and Hi-MD's. Doesn't matter what format it was recorded in. I could listen to 5 songs, and then WHAM! it would cut off all sound and basicly re-start itself. Then it started doing weird things such as dropping out the music for 20-30 seconds at a time, but the time display still worked. occasionly it would just freeze (like a windows computer!) and i would have to eject the disc (while it was still playing no less!)

So i finally nipped it in the bud and took it back to Sony and got it "repaired" just as my warranty was about to run out.

The guy at the Sony Store was incredibly rude, accused me of dropping my player and saying how the technology is insuperior and is prone to breakdowns (!!!!)...he also told me that i oculd buy new warranty when i picked it up. No worries, i though. I asked him twice to make sure of that. He said yup.

So i get the player back about 2 weeks later and its all shiny and looks brand new (all they did was clean it!) and the guy refuses to sell me a new warranty and doesnt remember saying i could get a new one. he claims that the warranty is now old (as it ran out while in the repair shop) and we argued, and i left. I was happy, sort of...

Well 3 months later it is doing the same thing once again. And I am no longer under warranty and don't want to spend ANY cash on getting this thing fixed as they obviously did not fix the original problem...

Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? or how I should go about handling this? I know Sony has had some terrible customer service issues in the past, and I don't wanna NOT get this resolved. So any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well, coincidently today my NH900 made me angry and I wanted to throw it. I was listening a long recording and all of the sudden it skipped to the next track, I pushed the stop button but it skipped to the next track again and again so I pulled off the battery to stop it. A moment later I was listening another long recording and Ive locked the player buttons but Ive forgotten it so I started to operate it, I pushed pause and the display started to blink without affecting the play back, the stop button didnt work just filled the disc icon. I entered to the menu to activate the beep then I realized that the hold switch was set... wtf! These 1st-gen bugs really pissed me off (All of this without considering the poor battery perfomance that Ive experienced). Right now Im thinking to sell the NH900 and get another HiMD device.

well I know that this has really started to tick me right off....its by far, my medium that gets me through the day....I am going to get the new RH1 when it comes out, but I really don't wanna use it as my portable player, thats what a cheap-o like the 600D is for! LOL....

Argh!, why can't they just issue new firmware for the 1st gen models?

I suspect the problem is hardware, not firmware.

One of my two NH900s has the "famous button problem", the other is fine.

The one with the problem works correctly with the remote (and even "sexily" with the MC40-ELK remote ! )

Your repair should be guaranteed for twelve months from the date of repair. Take it back and demand they sort it again.

Call sony back, I'm pretty sure they have to repair it again if it broke only 3 months after a repair. I recommend trying an exchange though, that way you get a nice new 600D with no problems. (Heck, when the jog dial broke on my 600D after 5 months of use, I got it exchanged for a new rh10 for only 30 bucks!)

I've tried out well my buggy NH900 only to discover that I can't repair it myself.

It's definitely not a hardware problem. And this is even more disappointing because sony

doesn't give a firmware update program. This is the last MD I buy from sony.

I had buttons problems already with a N-505 and I'm fed up of this cheap gears.
