James R
Hello everyone, I just purchased the Hi Md MZM100 it came withe the ECMDS70P I know it drops at 100Hz I see the MD has a setting for Loud volume recording and a low mic sens setting. My question is this I have a set of the Microphone Madness MCSM-8 Cardoids with the mint box. I'll be recording some shows coming up one will be seated right at stage the other will be farther back outdoors at speaker left. Without spending more than what I paid for the recorder what have been some good mic's for everyone? Also has anyone used the Loud level setting to record with ? Many Thanks! Jazzworkerbee
I use a rode NT4 that you can find for around $350. It's rigget and a fantastic value, but the mikes ate permenantly set at 90 degrees.I've used the high end Sony ECM-MS957. Not the most transparent sound in the world but you'll get decent recordings. You can find it for around $150 to $300The Audio Technica AT822 is a very rugget mic that makes nice recordings as well. It goes for around $200.But I would try not to use the automatic mic sensitivity settings for your MD because there are clipping issues which may cause your recordings to come out too low or sound "jerky" between dynamic highs and lows. I always set it to manual and watch the signal, especially if your mics are underpowered, there can be a lot of distortion. But if you set it to "loud" it increases the sound pressure level of the mics by supplying them with more power (not good for battery recording) but it can help you to have cleaner sounding recordings in the end. But when recording loud music, make sure your mic has a high sound pressure level (SPL) rating to agoid distortion. I hope this helps, cuz I've made a lot of mistakes in learning this stuff!!!Jazzworkerbee
The Low Volta
be sure to check the mics and battery boxes made by greenmachine (there's a DIY-thread, but he sells pre-made ones as well) as they are very stealthy, very good and not really expensive for what they really are worth!if you're in the US, be sure to check the SoundProfessionals online store... they sell reasonably priced stuff (the SP-BMC2's are quite good starter mics)I would go omni and manual rec levels as well (if really loud use Mic -> batt-box -> line-in as this will avoid distortion even when recording some really loud stuff)

mrsoul
The Auto settings for mic recordings can be tricky and you will get some fluctuations as the preamp trys to accomodate the music. Your best bet as The Low Volta stated is to use the Manual settings. You can always raise the level with some normalization by the computer. Avoid AGC and use manual for any concert recording. I only use AGC if I am recording my kids talking or recording a sermon or speech, etc.
