Uses for Slightly Damaged Players/Recorders...

After reading this entry in the Entered the NH900 Twilight Zone? thread, I wanted to pose this question.

I've been emailing a member about an RH10 with a dead display. My goal is to have a second player, and an occasional recorder for when I am speaking (usually Sunday School or preaching). So, would sub$100 be reasonable in this situation?

Thanks,

Why not?

I mean if you don't mind recording with AGC... After all, display is unused when machine is connected to PC for up/down-loads anyway

That's what I was thinking. I didn't know if I would be hosed from recording without the display. But if it'll work, voice is forgiving when recorded with ample gain.

BTW, AGC = ???

Thanks,

Automatic Gain Control ;)

In fact I found it absolutely satisfactory for recording spoken material (sermons) - especially when it is not convenient to sit near the recorder and watch levels.

However I've only used AGC with clean feeds from mixing console. With noisier "binaural" mics I still always use manual level control - I believe constant noise is more suitable for reduction

There seem to be quite a few instances of dead or dying OLED displays.

Should I be worried?

(I currently don't have any machines with OLED displays - until I lash out on the RH1 that is !!! :D )

May ,I know why do you want a player who`s display doesn`t work ???

Why not buy a new player instead ..??(by spending few more money ..I will never take a damaged player even someone give me that player for free ..

Because you'd be paying less than or equal to $100 for a $200+ unit, which (hoping that only the screen is malfunctioning) will become a great, salvaged unit. And according to the other comments, the screen isn't that vital when paired with a decent remote.

I'd take a damaged player from someone for free since I can always use its Li-ion/NiMH battery, remote, or AC adaptor. ;)

LOl ,Jaylen .I only said damaged player ..Not including those accessories .LOL

I'd still take it. There are guys who will fix these things for you at non-Sony prices (like on eBay there is a reputable MD seller who offers these services). And who knows, maybe "damaged" isn't as bad as it seems. Like in this thread, the RH10 is damaged, but it's just the display, which doesn't render the unit completely useless. One person's trash, another person's treasure. :D

Good Point..Now buy OLD things, Jaylen

I have. My very first and very last MD unit that I bought used - the ugly-gold, but reliable N505. The other "old" things that I've bought "new" are the NH1 and NH3D. :P

Have you ever tried to get something repaired by SONY? EXPENSIVE. The LCD display on my MZ-R700 cracked (my fault) and I ordered a new one to replace it (I did the work myself). It cost $125 for just the display/front circuit board.

After that I decided I am never going to do this again. I'd rather buy a broken MZ-R700 (i.e. dead laser, dead motor, but working LCD) and scavenge parts from it. Much cheaper than buying just the single part from Sony.

And, if you buy one MD player with a damaged LCD for $20, and another with a dead motor or laser for $15....you can swap parts and make a fully working one for cheap!

Yeah ,I know they charge huge amount for only repairs ..they give me an Estimation of or Rs 8400 for about $200 repairing my Digital Camera ..I took my camera back from them.

Also We Indians Pay Double charges for buying new things ..Like a an Hard disk players cost`s $200 in US in INDIA it will cost $400 terrible ..Sony charge excess premium on their items here ..Then they say we don`t have big market here in INDIA.Indians are not fools who are going to pay double cost for the same thing ..:angry::angry::angry:

Basically that person is buying His first RH10 so I though he should buy a ne model not a scratched & damaged one ..

Basicaly It` my opinion ... No Arguments

Since he/she said this will be a second player, he/she will have a backup. So technically, yeah it's the first RH10, but not the first unit. I think they're good to go.

Till now I haven`t bought any second hand unit .

Good for you. The N505 is the last and only unit that I've bought used and the rest of my units I bought new. I didn't want to shell out money for a new N505 because I was just starting out on the format and wasn't sure if MD was for me. You just have to understand that some people's budgets are limited (or they simply don't want to spring that much for it) and so something like an RH10 with a damaged screen would work for them, first player or not. So if they post about buying a used unit, then I bet they've already considered buying a new unit and it is not an option for them. I mean, sure, obviously the best thing would be to buy new.

In my opinion, an RH10 with a damaged screen is more functionally worthy of keeping than a DH10P with a damaged screen - so it's also all about perspective. And if it's going to save that person $100+ compared to new, then I say go for it. They can use that money later on for say, an RH1, blanks, or headphones.

Just a healthy discussion. :ok:

Jaylen ,Topic also suggests

Is a Dead OLED player worth it?

For me it`s waste to spend money on Dead OELD player ..

But now iT`S OK Some might agree some might not.If i don`t have money to buy an 100% working model then i will prefer not to buy it .

Um, my post was on-topic if you notice the beginning of their thread title is:

Uses for Slightly Damaged Players/Recorders..., If you really want to get technical, it was you who initially took the thread off-topic by asking "why not buy new" when this thread is clearly inquiring about used/old/damaged. :P

Ok, Stuge, I'm done with this thread as I can see that you are starting to take offense at someone not agreeing with you. So, I won't be re-visiting this.

javajeb, whatever you decide, good luck!
