OT: Problems Charging NH1

When the unit is charging, the menu says this "-- min Charging." Does that require that I set the minutes in order that it charge? I try to do that, but it doesn't work. The unit basically charges for a minute, then stops. Does this mean I got a bum battery? I'm told the battery should be in fine condition, and the unit is almost impeccable. Of course, it won't play unless docked with the adaptor.

Someone help me please, especially if I'm wrong.

This is the email I sent the ebay seller:

I received my item today, but discovered a very disappointing problem. This unit is not charging at all. It starts to charge, says the correct menu language "-- min Charging," switches to "00 min Charging," and finally shuts off. And the unit will not function unless plugged in, so either, it's the battery or the unit. One is defective. It should start out at 60 minutes and reduce as it charges, not simply go to zero and shut off unless it is fully charged. If the battery really is fully charged, then the unit is seriously defective.

I've never set anything (like "the minutes") in order for the unit to charge. I just plug it in using my universal adapter and look for the red light on the side (which does turn off after some time). After about 4 hours or so, the battery is full. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll charge up my NH1, watch more carefully what happens, and let you know.

Thanks, Jaylen. You care about me. :D I really believe I have either a defective unit or battery, and I have e-mailed the seller directly and used Ebay to contact him. I am awaiting the response, hoping he will be cooperative in order that I avoid having to do the whole bad feedback/reporting deal.

My RH1 will do exactly what you describe if the battery is turned 180degrees from how it shoudl go in. Try rotating the battery to the opposite orientation??

I charged one of my 1-bar-left batteries and this is how it went: red light turns on; 60 min left --> 00 min (slowly); red light turns off. So, the battery is about 75%-ish full. There's still a trickle charge to get it 100% (even though the red light is off), but I remember reading that it takes a couple of more hours. To charge/use my unit, I have the NH1's back facing me and insert the battery with the gold bars facing me and to the left.

Edit: I did what pws suggested. I put the battery in "backwards" (NH1's back is facing me; gold bars facing away) and tried to charge. It went from "-- min" and appeared as if it was charging because the red light was on. Then, after about 30 sec, the unit went to "00 min" and shut off.

I think (hopefully) that pws is right on about this. Good luck.

I just think it's rather presumptuous for both of you to answer that as if I didn't know. If I didn't know, I would have asked. I just want to take this time to thank myself for figuring this out. LOL! I am just kidding, you guys. Thanks, from the bottom of my heart, for stopping me from sending the unit to Sony USA and paying for the shipping or putting the seller out of the way. I just had a PLATINUM blonde moment. I will take the time to review the unit properly tomorrow. I had a work order number and everything. I was so upset. I have an outdoor concert July 6th.
