Sonic Stage My Backup Tool

Now, I'm trying to backup my library in 4.0 as I did only a few days ago - a message stating "There are no copyright restricted tracks" pops up just after I tell it to start the backup process, before even seeing what amount of space is required and answering where I want to back up to.

It will go no further than this. It starts to show the calculating necessary disc space message, but quickly goes to this message instead. What's going on with SS 4.0?

Thanks,

Kent

as there are no copyright restricted track ... the SS-backup tool is useless! you should just copy the library to a backup volume and presto...

the SS-backup tool is a relic from days where Sony was so paranoid about copyright that they would have wanted to saw their name in all their artists' underwear... and now it is only necessary if you have purchased songs from connect store or you still have a SS-library steming from ripping with older copyright protecting SS-versions

still it is strange as you say you have already used the tool before with the same library

have you 'removed' the copyright from the tracks by 'recoding' them to the same bitrate but with the unchecked 'add copyright' box?

Yes, it is strange. I did a backup a week ago and didn't change anything in between - except for adding a number of MP3 files that have no DRM. I have about 15 GB in the library.

I've used SS since the ver 2.x days and it never seems consistent in how it deals with things, so I'm generally confused about SS issues, and appreciate you sharing the knowledge.

Plus anytime Sony support tells you to fix a problem by uninstalling and reinstalling SS (mostly that's what they seem to recommend), they make it a point to say do a backup of your songs.

well if you want to be sure you won't need the backup tool, just follow the directions in this thread to strip atrac files from DRM using the file conversion tool (MP3's shouldn't have any Sony DRM) and just simply backup by copying all the music files to a backup volume

after that you should be able to reinstall and use your existing library without any problems etc...
