Hey,

I have a Sony MZ-R910, and I'm suddenly getting a READ ERR message for all my discs, which are all Sony 74 minute, which came with the recorder when I bought it off ebay maybe 2 years ago.

Old discs, brand new unused discs, it doesn't matter, they all don't work.

Can anybody give me some insight on what to do about this? The manual just says to reinsert the disc, which I've tried to no avail.

Wisdom anybody?

Many thanks!

What could I get that's comparable to the MZ-R910? I'm a little out of the loop as far as buying a new MD recorder.

Anybody?

Welcome to MDCF!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. It seems that your unit's optical block has expired; thus the "READ ERR" message. You may want to consider getting a new unit.

just have a look at the minidisc.org equipment browser... the new MD-mode is Hi-MD and it offers more storage space, better SQ, backwards compatability (with your old discs), ...

also look at the "product reviews and pictorials" section here on the forums and read a bit

it is very hard to recommend a new recorder as we need a lot of info as to what you expect from the recorder and what you want to pay etc... so just have a look and ask some more specific questions afterwards

that's for sure, but for music, maybe non-Hi-MD is enough?

well, perhaps (Net)MD is sufficient, but...

- I personally like to record music in the highest quality possible and Hi-MD gives PCM (=CD quality)

- Hi-MD allows you to upload your recordings digitally (through USB)

- you say 'for music', but I always thought music was quite demanding... for what wouldn't (Net)MD be enough then? speech?

but this is just my personal opinion of course...
