wjakub
Hi. New member with a question I’m hoping someone can answer. I’m sure someone at Sony support can answer this but finding that person or persons may not be easy. So I’m posting this to the “real” users. I currently have a Sony MDS-JB940 Minidisc deck which I use every nite to record a late nite radio show as well as music. I also have a Sony MD walkman MZ-S1 which I use for portable playback primarily. I have a library of MD’s that I would like to upload to my Mac computer so as to keep a digital archive of these radio shows on my Mac. My MZ-S1 cannot upload. From what I’m reading about the Hi-MD units is that I can upload files from an Hi-MD portable unit to my Mac ONLY if they are recorded in Hi mode. So my question is can I dub my MD recorded radio shows from my MDS-JB940 Deck to one of the Hi-MD portable units such as the MZ-RH1 and have the new recording in Hi mode so that I can then upload to my Mac? If so which Hi models will do this for me? I’d rather not have to buy the top of the line unit if I don’t have to. After all the files are recorded from talk radio and I don’t have a need to upload music to my computer from my walkman. Thanks,Walt
raintheory
There are 3 units that currently allow uploads to Mac - MZ-M10, MZ-M100, MZ-R1. The recordings have to be in Hi-MD mode. With any of those units, you could simply run an optical/digital line from your MDS-JB940 to the optical-in on the portable and record in your desired format (PCM/Hi-SP/Hi-LP). This would be realtime recording, but they could then be uploaded.Does your mac have a digital/optical TOSlink input? If so you could just run the optical out from your deck directly to your mac and use a program like the freeware Audacity to record.
A440
Got a friend with a PC? You could get the MZ-RH1, install SonicStage on the PC and upload all those old MD recordings directly. The RH1 is the only unit that will upload the old formats.

wjakub
Yep, absolutely. Thanks for the info! Currently my Mac is an older G4 but next year I'm hoping to upgrade to one of the new Intel Chip Macs.If I had one of the new Intel chip Macs could I then "boot" the computer in "windows" OS and upload the MD files? Would the audio programs then be available whenI boot in the normal "Mac" OS? Realtime dubbing is so time consuming.
The Low Volta
no, the windows programs are not available in OSX, but perhaps you could reserve a part of the HD (one partition or an external HD) for shared music files...the windows SS (or with himd Renderer) allows you to save the music as Wav and MP3 which can be used without conversion by mac OSX so realtime dubbing isn't necessary anymore
A440
Might be a bit of terminology confusion here. If the "programs" you mean are the radio programs, once you have uploaded them (and perhaps converted to .wav), using SonicStage, they're all yours to edit/copy/transfer as you please, just like any other .wav files. The computer program SonicStage is PC-only. But I don't think that's what you meant.

If I'm playing the MD disc on ...say the MZ-RH1 do I still have editing capabilities. I input trac marks frequently as bookmarks. This is important to know.
