Accidentally erasing discs

This is a strange one. I have had an MD Walkman MZ-S1, sport model for several years now. It has a multi-function joystick type operation.

Well for some unknown reason when I move the joystick to "play" I now get a "blank disc" message. I've put the disc in my MD deck and sure

enough it is blank! For some reason the unit is malfunctioning and erasing full discs when I go into play mode. Anyone heard of this problem

before? I have dropped the unit a few times in its history which might have contributed to its possible demise. Can the firmware be reprogrammed

to normal working status? Any suggestions?

thanks,

Walt

Hi Walt,

Common problem, it's a hardware issue, the wiring to the record head goes bad, possibly a repair shop in your area can fix it, don't put in any more discs.

For what the repair mught cost now may be the time for you to get into Hi-MD, some bargains out there.

Good luck,

Bob

Yes, definitely stop using the portable or it will most likely randomly erase more of your discs. You can probably find a replacement portable for fairly cheap on eBay.

If you have lost important recordings PM me, I may be able to help you retrieve them.

What Deck do you have?

The infamous "BLANK DISC" strikes again. It happened to my MZ-N1. I started getting stuttered playback and then it would erase discs every now and then. Sony said they'd try to fix it for around $99, and that's IF they could even fix it. It's so not worth it. Now you have an excuse to go minidisc shopping!

Actually I've just purchased the MZ-RH1. I was hoping the MZ-S1 could be easily fixed but I'm not willing to spend much, certainly

not $100. Anyways I find if I slide the write-protect tab over the discs seem to be safe....for now anyways.

thanks.
