Using my MZ-R50 and a blank Hi-MD disc in the/my usual method to record streamed music, with the security tab closed/recordable, the readout say's- P/B ONLY.

Why, and how do you get streamed/mic'd/or? data onto the disc if it won't allow recording?

Is this another "thanx a lot, Sony..." moment, or a problem with the disc, or am I blowing it somehow?

Help, much appreciated!

None of the above.

It's a "I should've read up on Hi-MD technology before buying a 1GB disc for my R50" moment. Just playing and welcome to MDCF. I'm not sure what your 1GB disc wrapping said, but all of mine say "This disc is only for use in a Hi-MD recorder or player that features the 'Hi-MD' logo." You could always upgrade your R50. There's an RH1 that you might like. ;)

Edit: This is kind of on-topic; here's something that MDX found: http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-MD-Walkman-Minidi...tem280047599420
