Should I buy an MDS-JE480 deck?

I've possible chance of a JE480 for 40 UK pounds. Original UK price 120UKP. Anyone know if it would be worth it, considering it could be 4 years old?

Second question - would there be any difference in palyback quality rather than using my NHF800 through the amp. I just this morning found that the NHF800 headphone output will drive the aux input adequately.

(Oddly enough, the amp, a Cambridge A1, has both aux inputs and video inputs, and the 800 will drive both OK, yet my Sharp MT280H will only drive the video input, and not the auxillary.)

I guess I'm asking you folks to make my mind up for me whether to buy the deck or not, but hey, isn't that why you are here? Of course, I could buy it just because it's an endangered species, because it looks nice, and because the remote would hopefully be handy. ;)

Thanks for moving the post, though it's redundant now as I decided to buy the deck.

I put the post in Technical as it was originally just meant to be about the output from the headphone socket of the NHF800 being enough to drive the aux on the amp. The deck was an afterthought.

You won't be able to playback Hi-MD formatted discs on the deck... Other than that, I personally would go for it (used to have the JE470 myself).

Yes, I knew that. I have a couple of hundred 74 minute discs still in original format, so the deck will hopefully give my hi-fi a new lease of life. I've been listening to portables through headphones for the last few years but after plugging the NHF800 into the amp yesterday, I got the bug again. I'd forgotten how good my 20 year old KEF's are. I hope my neighbour enjoys them just as much.

Just give them a little Motorhead for those tender moments!!
