Hi-MD Laser Power?

I'm wanting to pick up a 2nd NH1 online, although its going to be second hand. I was just worried about the laser power of these portable devices, does the laser power become much weaker after being stored (and used frequently) for 2 years?

I just don't want the bugger dying out on me in its 3rd year. (With the hi-md units released in 2004, i'd assume the australian nh1's are also manufactured in 2004?)

There is no reason to worry about the laser wearing out. Just look at all the older units, take the first MD recorder for example, there are lots of MZ-1's that still works perfectly well. The ribbon cable is more likely to break before the laser wears out. The NH1 is very well built and I have yet to hear problems with it.

Unfortunately, Both my MZ-r500 and MZ-R900 have worn out. But yes you are right in a way, because it was not only the laser power but the direct-drive mechanism that actually stuffed too. They still work, but they skip frequently, and in the case of my R900. it refuses to play a disk until I take it out and put it in multiple times.

Should have no probs with the laser provided you don't drop the unit or otherwise cause the laser to track incorrectly. Normally the laser will work indefinitely --I've still got a 100% WORKING R90. This unit predates Net MD / LP2/LP4 but strangely enough the battery is the same as the RH10 uses.

If you have problems with playing / skipping etc you might find the old MD cleaner disk works great (these are no longer made but if you can source one grab it. It works just like a CD cleaner disk).

Another cleaning possibility is to use a Photographers Air Brush or even a can of compressed air sprayed GENTLY over the Laser area. This should dislodge any dust the laser might have picked up due to electrostatic charge or other wear and tear.
