ozpeter
The "Joyce Hatto scandal" has reverberated around the world of classical music for some weeks now, but for those few who are not aware of it, the background can be read at http://www.gramophone.co.uk/newsMainTempla...newssectionID=1Now the admitted perpetrator of the hoax has revealed that the necessary editing was undertaken on minidisc. See http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol...icle1466154.ece for details. However, given that time-stretching and eq and reverb also appears to have been involved, there must have been more to it than that.Still, as far as MD is concerned, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Sparky191
A sad story, but really he knew exactly what he was doing. I imagine they'll be a few lawsuits now from all angles.Whats a “Sit-wellian figure” exactly? Can't find anything about it online. Karl Myer
It is a poignant story. Thanks for the links. Here is the relevant passage:Around this time, he {William Barrington-Coupe, Joyce Hatto's husband} says, their recording sessions were marred by her gasps of pain. “I’d say to her, ‘I’m sorry, you were breathing very heavily; we have to do that again.’ She’d get very irritated because she was in a lot of pain. Sometimes I’d say we’d had a bit of technical trouble.” Soon Barrington-Coupe began dealing with the “technical trouble” himself by editing noisy “ambience” between the movements his wife was playing. Editing is one thing; what he describes as “taking portions of ready-made recorded material” is another: most would call it theft. He thinks he began editing "ambience" in the late 1980s. Not long afterwards he began editing-in small bits of others' recordings whose sound and style were similar to his wife's.“Everyone will say it’s impossible but I did it on a MiniDisc,” he says. “It has a wonderful capability; you can edit from one frame to another. Technically I was proud of what I did although I’m not proud of anything else. Maybe I began living a lie, and maybe that’s why I’m being punished now.” Edited March 9, 2007 by Karl Myer
Karl Myer
Whats a “Sit-wellian figure” exactly? Can't find anything about it online."Sitwellian" is an authorial adjective, like Hemingwayesque. Dame Edith Sitwell was one of three literary siblings in early 20th Century London. The music critic calling Joyce Hatto a Sitwellian figure probably alludes to her "wearing Jean Muir kaftans to hide her protruding stomach." Edith Sitwell was an eccentric dresser.
