Recording with the NH600

Hello everyone,

I'm pretty set on getting a Hi-MD, but I have yet to decide on which model. I would really like the RH1, but life doesn't always work out that way hehe...

Anyways I was reading about the NH600 which apparently has a line-in/optical. Since I'm completely new to the whole MD technology it may be a very stupid question, but can I plug a mic with batt. box into that line-in?

Would the recordings be of same quality as other Hi-MD's?

Please note I'm buying a Hi-MD for the only purpose of recording. I don't mind using the outside battery source for a mic since I may be recording in loud (bars, occasional concert venue) situations. I also plan on recording quieter audio in my own home and possibly outdoors for short films.

If the 600 doesn't do the trick, between the RH10 and the RH910, its my understanding that the RH10 is better, but for what I want it for is it worth it?

Thanks.

Make sure it is the NH600, with a line-in jack, and not the NH600D, with only a USB jack. Some dealers exploit the confusion. Ideally you should see a photo that shows the model number clearly or the white line-in jack.

The good news is that a mic and battery box into line-in should work just fine for loud music. Same quality, etc. It won't be good for quiet sounds. You would need a preamp for that. And if you're buying a preamp, you might as well get the NH700.

I have never owned one of the second-generation units, but people had troubles with the RH10.

The only difference between it and the RH910 is the display. If you don't need the display, get the RH910--or, better yet, the NH700.

Yeah I have noticed that difference and wouldn't make that mistake I hope...

The thing I have the most trouble with is judging what is a good deal or not, I see a few RH910's and NH700's on eBay. I can see the retail prices of these from the player FAQ page thing, but what are they worth now?

I'm currently looking at these auctions for possible bidding:

Sorry! Didn't notice this section.

Spend a few dollars more and get a unit with a mic input, you will be happier.

Bob

Yeah, I think I will need one with the Mic input.

Indeed, the MZ-NH700 is a great all round choice for both listening and live recording, and still uses just one AA. EBay had quite a few of them going lately, and some go for bargain prices. So, better snap one up while you still can...

Yeah for the battery thing, that's what I liked about the RH910 I posted a link to, it comes with the add-on battery thing.

Timing is a big factor, I don't even know if right now it's the right time to be getting a Hi-MD, apparently the prices on the RH1 were lower a while back than they are now... Oh well.
