ytrebil
Hi guys, after my head unit won't play copy CD's, I decided to try out minidiscs and it spits out minidiscs as well! Any idea???It's a Kenwood double din head unit which supports minidisc + CD, but it obviously doesn't like the ones I'm putting in which are Sony Premium 74's.Any advice/ideas to get minidiscs working on the head unit? Any kind of encoding technique?Cheers.

ytrebil
Model No.? The DPX-9200?Hi it’s the DPX-710 MD cheers.Really frustrating as I understand some head units don’t like copy CD’s, but didn’t realise they would have an issue with copy MD’s using the Sonic software Sony supply.Just wondering if there is a “special” way of uploading music on to MD (or CD for that matter!) which enables head units to read the data without spitting it out. Many thanks for your help in advance. ytrebil
Just another thing to add – could multi-session burning have anything to do with this??? I have read a few CD problems where users are using multi-session burning and not closing the CD off properly. Do MD’s do this too?TIA. greenmachine
What kind of unit do you use to record the MDs and what mode/bitrate?. Don't know that particular Kenwood car model, but it might be compatible with SP (and MONO) mode only (which can't even be transferred via Sonic Stage in full quality). It is recorded via USB on to a Sony NET MD player/recorder.I did not change any options when installing Sonic Stage, just simply burnt it with the standard options. ytrebil
Is your Japanese any good? lolhttp://www.kenwood-service.com/imdl/car/B64-1043-00.pdfThat's the manual - there's a Minidisc section - most in Jap tho!

ytrebil
Still no god damn luck with this! Even burning CD's I can't get right so they play on the head unit. I want to know what I'm doing wrong./puzzled.
RoGeR
Try playing a CD you bought and not burned! If that doesnt play as well, then it looks like your player is dead. You won't be able to play tracks recorded on Sonicstage... I went thru the manual very quickly and it states that its not MDLP or NetMD compatible. This simply means your MD player is only ATRAC compatible. (MDLP is ATRAC3)
ytrebil
Does play bought CD's, also managed to play some other copy CD's I just tried but some are fuzzy and others it plays fine but some tracks it won't and it will stop playing the music altogether if it gets upset haha. When you say manual you mean the one I posted up for my car head unit? If so, thanks for looking and I wish I knew Japanese. Is there a way around this? ie burning to Minidisc via USB which makes it only ATRAC?If not, what other procedure do I need to use? Perhaps burning a CD off, playing it on a HiFi and recording it that way? If so, what is the step by step on how to do this? Thanks very much. Also, any recommendations on what blank CD-R's to use? It doesn't run Maxell's well at all nor Imagination. Edited March 27, 2007 by ytrebil
RoGeR
Yes, I briefly went through the manual of your Kenwood player, and it didnt take my japanese to know that your car headunit does not support MDLP. You did not mention what MD recorder do you have? If its a higher end one with Digital Line-In, you could always do real time manual recording by connecting the MD recorder via fibre optic cable to your MD. You would obviously need to set the recorder to record in SP-Mode. That should be ATRAC and would most likely play on your car unit. If I'm not wrong, if you have the MZ RH1, you can use Sonicstage to download tracks onto your MD in SP. <unsure, still a newbie in RH1 >Hope that helps. greenmachine
Since SP and ATRAC are different descriptions for the same mode and you said to have tried SP already and it doesn't work, I suppose there must be a problem with the car unit. ytrebil
Thanks for kind replies. It does have a Digital Line-In and has a fibre optic cable. I tried recording on to the MD using SP-Mode on Sonicstage which took absolutely AGES to copy across, but it still didn’t work. Literally put it in the headunit, it tries to read it for a second then spits it back out again – very frustrating!!!Looks like I’m going to have to buy a new headunit or just use CD’s for the time being. Annoying as I bought a Minidisc portable recorder especially to record Minidiscs for my car! Car is lowered so CD’s tend to JUMP a lot on bumps etc. Might prowl eBay for a selection of various Minidiscs some with music on etc just to try out if they work in my car.Once again, thanks for your help guys – much appreciated.
