Review of a Sony MiniDisc MZRH1 I bought a couple of days ago.

Other than mentioning the Sound Quality , and the need to RTM , you didnt realy review it .

Maybe after you get a decent Microphone and find out what it is REALLY good at .( heheheheh iPod will never come close)

when you have recorded your first Live concert , or some important event that you capture in such clear recreation of the moment and it soaks in what you have .......then you can review it !

but he did give it a thumbs up, and liked it at 64, like you say let's see what he thinks at higher bitrates and live recording. It is nice to see someone willing to go against the grain, and like the product,

Well, I've given 48k a go, and funny enough, its actaully not too bad - tolerable enough for when I sit and listen to music on the bus or at university.

I wish I had found MiniDisc's earlier as to save me time and money on the wasted ipods of the past.

Get an Audio Technica AT-822 , to go with it , and start Capturing stuff , or we will never forgive , and make you watch 53 hours of Perry Mason nonstop.

and by the way , Welcome to MD

Hi Kawai, If you pledge allegiance to the addiction of MD (M.D.A. for short) you to can be the regional acting secretary general for your locality. All you have to do is beware that this is a good addiction, that it will keep you off the streets, and you will proclaim MD to all

Welcome

:dirol: Now , my young padawan , you must learn "The Way of the Source" There are Many sources , be aware of the Dark side of the Source.

It will draw you into confusion. Debate , and Contention are at the heart of it . Sample rates and Conversionsion , Frequency Examinations, endless comparisons ......these are the ways of the Dark Side.

They will prevent you from Truly "Hearing" ..... The Source .

Seek the Source , It will be in Many forms ,...and yet it is one my Padawan . Whether it come as Optical , or Analouge ,.....even cloaked as USB . The Source is mysterious, and Powerful . It will Teach you Many things , Languages , Songs, Stories from of old read aloud and made available to the Source.

Always Respect the Source , It is Everywhere , ...... All Around you Pulsing , Beating , Breathing , Giving endlessly to those who know it.

May the Source be with you .

Seeking Domination ... The path of the Dark Side you Seek .... No, but Persuasion , One must think deeply to see thru the Fog of Media complexity . It is not known to all . and NOt can it be . !

Just use the Source It will teach you .

Slide open the shutter, look deep into the lovely surface beneath, that is where the answer lies, you must look deeeeeep

Thanks, 'bobt' and 'the wizard of oz'! (For wishing me happy birthday in The Official Happy Birthday Thread.)

And thanks to the moderators and regulars of the forums for all their help and support since I joined in February. Most of the help has been through searching the archives, but some 'just in time,' timely, such as kurisu's thread back then, "Minidisc Canada Having Nice Sale." That sale was still the lowest price I have seen on the MZ-RH1 ($270 US).

I enjoyed kaiwai's post yesterday, reviewing the RH1 he just bought. He emphasized the robustness of the MD system -- not just the RH1. He said, "it does one thing, and does it well." He was quickly corrected in Post #2 by Guitarfxr: "get a decent Microphone and find out what it is REALLY good at."

Many times I carry my MD player like 'kaiwai' describes, a couple hours a day. It doesn't need to be coddled as, say, my portable CD player.

I'm so glad to have found this website and discussion group. On my last birthday, MD had been long-gone from my consciousness for years.

True, but then again, I consider recording as part of that one function :) The competitors try to do everything, and the do each rather crappy; reminds me of mobile phone I had before - did everything really crappily, I would have preferred less features, and for each to work as they should.

The MD player, one isn't constantly shitting bricks over whether one has broken the whole device through accidental droppage. Drop an iPod an expect in a couple of days for the thing to die - I've had that happen before.

Another interesting thing; I have found that 48k is quite good for vocal only music such as Gregorian Chants; I was able to squeeze 10cds into a single 74minute MD :)

Hey, Bob, I dig the fact that you enjoy visiting my BIGHMW Network of websites, and enjoy my history in the music business, as well as my ongoing other endeavors, including my hardcore allegiance to all that is MiniDisc and Hi-MD (since 1998), remember, as we say: "ATRAC or death!!!"

I am better dead being different with a Hi-MD Walkman in my hand than a sheep with an iPod in it (god forbid!!!).

Now if you and I can only convert world-renowned model/actress and former Erikson Center classmate of mine from 1984, Cindy Margolis into an MiniDisc/Hi-MD freak like you and I are Bob, you can find out more about her legacy and career and also drop her a line at either http://www.CindyMargolis.com or at http://www.myspace.com/CindyMargolis (I am such a lucky S.O.B. to have gone to high school with her almost 25 years ago!!! :))

Just send her a minidisc full of your favorite high school songs, or even your own stuff, she'll have to swim or sink!!!

Better yet, how about some of her favorites from our days in high school on MD, that would be better.

As far as "swim or sink", her now-trademark "upper-front build" :pleasantry: (Howard Stern's favorite part of her body) would act as a make-shift floatation device, so Cindy won't sink if she can't swim, she'll just merely float off into the sunset. :give_heart2:

BTW, Sorry Cindy Margolis, but I have already been (common-law) married for 18 years, and I would never trade Alice in for anybody else out on the market. :first_move:

But, if I could date a supermodel for a day, Cindy Margolis would be my pick, without question, hesitation, or consultation. No B.S. about that!

Aimee Mann , was in my Math class in 9th grade ,

I think that is cooler , cuz she's a Musician .......

I would much rather have a Moderately attractive woman who is a lot of fun to be around and has a Mind that is rich and dynamic .

You go on endlessly about Margolis ,

You should see my guitar students.......!!!!

Well, my wife Alice Yantz happens to fit in that "moderately attractive woman" catagory, and her mind is full of good things.

Well I guess you could say that I am a bit biased towards Cindy because of our having gone to high school together years ago (1983-84), not only that, but also, because of what she has done since then.

Nah that's her band not mine .

I'm too old to jump around like that , plus My hair just isnt long enough anymore ................. :sorry:

Mine is pretty long, but I am losing my hair, my common-law wife is readying me for a toupee (!) of all the things.

Anyhow, back to the program, I just got my RH1 in from UPS via B & H Photo-Video, and I am quite impressed, in fact I was able to upload my legacy MD collection with no problems what so ever, and, also, without have to go the extra measure of burniong a backup CD of it exclusively for use in SonicStage, BRAVO SONY!!!

The MZ-RH1 is a godsend, it is everything we MiniDisc and Hi-MD freaks have waited 15 long years for, total and absolutely unlimited capability to upload and download anything and everything!!! It is now hooked up to my PC as an external drive, that's what I bought it for.

As for my NH700 and RH710 units, they are now exclusively used as portable units that I use on the road for listening to.
