Hi everybody - very new to all this - but I suspect that this mic: Sony ECM-MS907 Stereo Digital Microphone

Described as:

Electret condenser stereo microphone for advanced amateur use

Mid/side (MS) capsules create natural stereo panorama

Adjust pickup angle (90-120 degrees) for single voice/instrument or multi-voice/instrument

Cannon XLR connector and oxygen-free copper Litz cord

Ideal for DAT or MD digital recorders

May do the job for decent recording into the NH600 line in port?

Can anybody advise?

Many thanks

John

A line input needs a strong signal. A mic input--there is none on the MZ-NH600--provides a little bit of power to the mic and also has a preamp behind it to handle a weak signal. The MS907 expects a preamp.

For amplified music you can probably get away with mics plus a battery module.

I use Soundprofessionals BMC-2 mics and a Microphone Madness Classic Mini Battery Module to record music into my line-in jack. Those are probably fairly sensitive mics, more sensitive than the Sony--which means they generate more voltage when sound hits them--and the 9V of power from the module provides a strong enough signal for line-in except for things quieter than speech.

Your best bet is a small Mic preamp to bring it up to line level , M-Audio Audio Buddy , or similar I can built a high end one for you but it will take a little while and then I have to ship from Japan .

I have the parts for a 40db gain Mic pre , for unbalanced mics which would be just about right , It requires 6Volts battery bank (AA's in a Pack would be fine )

an easier alternative would be to ask if you can plug into the mixing board, most bands are OK with that if you ask,

lot easier than trying to re-engineer a product

Bob

In other words, "use the source"
