Ralphus
I have just bought the MZ-RH1.I have recorded my favourite cds. I'm now interested in recording the audio of my favourite music DVDs.At present I have no pc (getting one soon), so I'm using the unit itself. I have a 'toslink optical cable to 3.5mm' which I've used to record CDs but when trying to record a DVD, I get a "No Digital Copy" error warning.I understand I can use 'analog to 3.5mm' to do the job. My questions are1) Is there a way to do digital recordings from DVDs?2) If yes, what is the quality difference between analog & digital recordings from DVDs?3) If no, what is the quality of analog recordings of DVDs like? Any help/advice would be appreciated. Cheers
greenmachine
MD is a 44.1 kHz sample rate only format - just like CD - whereas DVD audio is often recorded in 48 kHz, thus there will be a down-sampling whether you copy the digital or analog route. A bit perfect copy is not possible with MD, but the quality should be still quite good even if you need to go the analogue route. With a PC you could use an audio extractor application to create a bit-perfect copy (at least with a non-protected DVD).
paularmenores
I record music DVD's to MD all the time - using both analogue and digital methods. Some discs will allow you to copy the audio using the optical cable directly with the DVD player (but these discs are rare). Most of the time you will need to use the analogue method. But I have to say that if your equipment is good, you won't notice any difference in quality. Just make sure your DVD output is in stereo, not multichannel (I have made this mistake lots of time). I use an Xitel USB-Optical converter with my Mac. This also allows me to copy any DVD (even the copy protected ones) to my MD digitally in real time. But I don't find any benefit in the audio quality compared to analogue, so I always prefer to use my decks.
Strungup
also when your playing the DVD ( or before you Play ) make sure the Audio settings of the DVD player ae not in 5.1 mode , but set it to PCM Stereo2.0 or whatever they label Stereo out as .
