AKA Frosty
My new MZ-M200 is my first Sony MD having owned several Sharp units. I've been away from MD for a while, using other MP3 players and flash recorders. I really love the quality of the recordings and the playback sound of the M200. My question - is the amount of "noise" the unit makes when the read/write heads move (I assume) normal? Seem quite loud!
sector001
other than the loud noises does the unit work properly? when I had the RH1, i don't recall it making any motor noise...
Sparda
If you are using standard discs, it is a lot louder than 1GB ones. The 1GB ones are fairly quite. I guess its because the 1GB discs are denser so it doesn't have to spin as fast and the head doesn't move as much thus less noise. I wouldn't worry too much about it. AKA Frosty
Thanks for the replies. I use Sony 1Gb disks. Here is a link to a short MP3 recording of the noise. This is pressing RECORD waiting a few seconds, then CANCEL. M200_Noise
ZosoIV
That sounds normal to me - in fact, some of my older, non Hi-MD units (R900, for example) were even louder upon spin-up. That's one of the trade-offs you make by using a mechanical device like MiniDisc over solid state.
AKA Frosty
Thanks again. Noticeably louder than my old Sharp units, but I'm glad to know it's normal. The M200 is a wonderful little machine. That sounds normal to me - in fact, some of my older, non Hi-MD units (R900, for example) were even louder upon spin-up. Avrin
A little bit louder than both my RH1s, but still normal. And the MP3 was recorded while downloading from a computer!
