Playing ATRAC CDs

AtracCD is only playable on AtracCD devices, nothing else. There is no way to extract the music from AtracCD, period. It's a dead-end format.

So even Sonic Stage will not recognize and play them? I had intended to back up my library using ATRAC CDs. Very unthoughtful of Sony not to enable Sonic Stage to extract ATRAC files from a CD.

Get one with optical out (most do now) , 490 songs per disc , at lowest bit rate I assume , but you wil always be able to program play , connect to your MD and redo it all .

Nope.

Nope. AtracCD is not intended for a backup, only for a dead-end playback system.

Don't mislead the OP.

The one at Radioshack, the DNE050PSBLK doesn't support Atrac.

None of the models listed at Sonystyle has optical out. The most recent Sony PCDPs that have optical out is the NE20 and NE920, both are discontinued.

Even on units that have optical out, AtracCD can only be outputted through the analog-out. And is it really wise re-encoding Atrac3+ 48kbps (to get 490 songs)?

Wow.

OK then, it is either leave the music on mini discs or make multiple backups on hard drives if you want to secure high quality sound. I have too many MD encoded at LP4 ( live concerts recorded off the radio) to bother converting them to WAV CDs. I may buy one of the ATRAC CD players just as a way of playing things in the car, but I already own 3 mini disc players. I guess Sony's strategy has worked well on me! I suppose I would save a few quid by transferring all the LP4s to ATRac CD's and then reusing the MD, but the time isn't really worth it. Probably better off to just put the money I would spend on an ATRAC player into more Hi MD discs and leave the old stuff on the 80 minute MDs. This is making the long awaited purchase of the MZ-M200 I made rather underwhelming. Other than the few live events I would like to make CDs for to hand out to friends, it is hardly worth the trouble to upload, and backup onto two hard discs just to save a one dollar MD. Not much advantage other than the organizational convenience of the hard disk.

Do any of you MD fans ever convert your Atrac .oma files to MP3 or other formats?

I recently looks at a couple of very cheap tools that say they will do the conversion.

I am looking for a way to use sound tracks mastered on my MD on movies edited and rendered to NTSC DVDs.

Am I missing something here?
