ray70
Hello, all. First post so please be gentle!I was an early adopter of minidisc, but jumped ship when the first ipod came out (Please don't ban me because of this). I am seriously thinking about buying a MZ-RH1 because I have a large collection of vinyl and still buy new albums on vinyl if they're available. The MZ-RH1 would be used for recording my vinyl collection using the line in input and listening to them during my daily commute. I have a couple of questions: Can anyone comment on the sound quality of the MZ-RH1 line in recording? Secondly, if I were to record using say the best quality, approximately how much recording time could I fit in to a one gig disc? Thanks in advance - nice forum by the way. A440
Another way to digitize your LPs is to get a high-quality external soundcard--Google for USB soundcard--and record onto your computer's hard drive with a program like Audacity (free). Then use lossless compression (like FLAC) to store those recordings on a large external hard drive. When you want to use the songs portably, convert them to mp3 and put them on a portable device as you need them. Even your (sputter) iPod. You can record the vinyl to Hi-MDs with an RH1, too. But at CD quality, a 1GB disc only holds about 1 1/2 CDs. You'd probably want to upload them to your computer from the Hi-MD for digital storage sooner or later, which is all-digital but still time-consuming since it's via the relatively slow USB 1.1. And frankly, you don't need uncompressed quality when you're commuting unless you are in an utterly soundproof limousine with a high-end stereo system. Even then, only dogs and audio-magazine writers can hear any difference between high-bitrate mp3 (256 or 320 kbps, or the Lame encoder's alt-preset-extreme) and uncompressed files: CDs, FLAC, etc.
Strungup
Hey 440 , I downloaded "Wish you were here" from iTunesplus , which is supposed to 256 kbps AAC which is better than mp3 . I wrote a very , shall we say "Passionate " email to apple expressing my disgust at what I heard . A certain member of the MDCF saved my sanity by sending me a Legitimate Copy of the same , But Properly done at Full cd quality , .....I would challenge anyone here to NOT hear the difference. Ray , get the RH1 , have a Good time with it . I use standard MD's and copy my vinyl all the time . I dont have to use the HI MD mode , so I have MD's that play on all my MD equipment, and they sound fine . The nicer your turtable , and clean LP's ( just before you play them ) will make a big difference in the high frequencies and smoothness of the sound. Strungup
Guitarfxr, how do you record standard MD on the RH1?Under the menus on the RH1 , find "Disc Mode " Put in in MD mode , then put a Blank MD (Standard ) into it The Rh1 will record in Both HiMD mode , and Standard , on a Regular MD .Sometimes I forget what is on what and end up sticking a Himd format into my regular MD's ......... They let me know real fast LOL.
bobzilli
What I should have said is "Can you do that with the drop and drag on the mac?" But I guess I will just try it and see. For me MD is jsut fine. I see no real benefits to HiMd except that it works on my Mac
raintheory
Just keep in mind that you can't have both Hi-MD and Legacy MD recordings on the same disc. You can use SonicStage to transfer files to a Hi-MD formatted disc in some of the older Atrac3 codecs (LP2 quality, for eaxample: 132kbps), but these will not be playable in older MDLP units if the disc is formatted as Hi-MD.Another example:If you format an 80min MD as Hi-MD and record some tracks via Line-in... You can only record further Hi-MD tracks to the disc. Switching from Hi-MD to standard MD disc modes (or vice versa) formats/erases all audio data. bobzilli
That's what I thought. I have about half of my discs in MD and the other half in Hi Md which wont play on my house deck of course. I keep hoping to find a way to drag and drop MD from MAC but alas no luck...yet!
