I am looking for a late model minidisc player that will play-record the new HD minidisc's. Portable preferred, but will look at component ones. I do have an older Sony deck, but want to get one of the newer ones.

I have tried to research the subject on the web, but haven't had much luck.

I suggest either the MZ-NH700--basic model, uses 1 AA battery, compatible only with PC--or the MZ-RH1, top of the line, compatible with PC and Mac for uploading new recordings and, most importantly, will upload your old MD recordings to a PC (but not a Mac).

Look on eBay for the MZ-NH700. The NHF800 is the same unit with an FM radio remote--a fairly useless acessory, but if you see a good quality NHF800 anywhere it's worth checking out.

A few retailers still stock the MZ-RH1, which is also called the MZ-M200 when it is bundled with a Sony DS70P microphone. Unfortunately, they are getting expensive.

Also, send a PM to BIGHMW, who seems to have some units for sale.

Note: any unit with a D in the model number, like NH600D or DH10P (a 1.3 megapixel minidisc camera, really bad idea), does not do realtime recording. The D means it's a Downloader, made to download music from your PC via USB for use as a portable player.

I do happen to have an extra NHF800, just the basic unit, along with the radio remote, an RM-MC39LT, which despite A440's claim as a "useless" accessory, does have it purposes, although I would highly recommend an RM-MC40ELK remote for more versatility especially when it comes to recording.

It also comes with a CD-ROM of the instruction booklet, as I bought this unit used myself, the power supply, and also some added accessories, and I can sell it to you at a pretty good price. Just PM me and I will give you a quote, and yes, I do take PayPal.

It may not be the RH1 or the M200, but it makes a great starting unit for the Hi-MD upstart.

You're right--I was too harsh. Having a remote is useful, of course. And I guess some people might even want to listen to the radio now and then.

My first Hi-MD was the NHF-800 and I used it constantly in all kinds of situations, until I dropped it one time too many. Great unit. But once I got the RM-MC40ELK remote, the FM-radio remote disappeared into a drawer. The FM remote also works with the NH700, my current workhorse, but I've never had occasion to use it.

It is perfect for when you go out to a ball game or other sporting event for play-by-play, stats, analysis (i.e.: lifetime BA against a certain pitcher, etc.), but yeah, when you factor in that the remote also works with the NH700, the only difference between the two is the NHF800's 4 surround sound modes (VPF Acoustic Engine), which for some folks (not necessarily myself) is a plus.

I like the radio idea, if it really works. And can you record from the radio?

Unfortunately, you can't record off of the radio tuner, but, you can record broadcasts from an external radio or other source using either the line or optical input (the line/optical in jack does both, but not simultaneously). I have done this with a number of radio programs that aired from time to time, hooked up a good-old Radio Shack Y-adapter to the line out of my stereo receiver and the stereo line in jack of my Walkman (the same as your current deck), it works great, and the beauty of it all is, if you use a 1GB Hi-MD disc you can record up to 93 minutes of uncompressed audio on it and then edit it on the PC (with SonicStage software, 4.2 recommended), just be sure you change discs when it gets pretty full during one of those annoying long commercial breaks so you will be ready for when they do come out of the commercial break.
