alexisvas
Well I have a difficult decision to take. The latest MD I bought was MZ-RH10, and I love it.Now I want to buy MZ-M200 to upgrade as it has some better recording features, but after some reading I admit i am looking to digital PCM recorders like TASCAM DR-1.I want it basically to record live loud gigs and of course as a portable playback machine. Is the recording quality of TASCAM DR-1 and other PCM recorders equal or superior to MZ-RH1. I saw DR-1 has some features that are completely useless to me, such as Vocal cancel feature (karaoke),Digital effects, Metronome function and Guitar tuner function. Also I have a simple battery module (MM-CBM-Mini) and mics (MM-BSM-8), so I dont know if I should trust DR-1 mics. What do you recommend???And also an important thing. The quality of manufacturing of these products. Will they last for more than 2 years if you take good care of them ?? I take good care of my machines, my MZ-RH10 has not a scratch. I know HiMDs are sensitive machines. TASCAMs ???Thanks for reading
Strungup
Good Questions , and the only thing I could say after actually hearing the DR1 , is for one person the DR1 will work , for another it wont .The Limiter will help control the peaks in Loud situations , something the MD does NOT possess . But the Mic Preamp of the RH1 /M200 is a little better ( I have the RH1 , so I know) What you need to do is Test out Both units , go to a Music store ( Guitar Center , Mars Music , Local guitar store etc . ) take some good headphones and Listen to the Tascam , play with the menues , then in the Gallery or from a willing member here , listen to samples from the RH1 , they are two different machines , the Tascam has a Tascam sound , the Rh1 has the Sony signature sound , The internal mics on the Tascam were a Little midrange peakish to me , but I own the AT-822 which is a VERY flat mic so I get spoiled. There is a type of dynamics to a sound where there is no limiter , an openess an airyness , when a Limiter is applied it gets boxy , or closed in unless it is a VERY GOOD limiter , that is why studio gear costs money . There arent any Really GOOD ,, Cheap recordings , it was paid for somewhere down the line , experience , equipment , both , it got paid for somewhere .The Battery Boxes , act as a Partial Limiter for the MD giving a little extra control over the input . I as a Guitar Player and teacher , would like very much to have the feature set of the Tascam , and am looking for a way to get it , but for the General Recordist ,........... different purpose . Strungup
Apparently , I am the first one to have this , as I have been searching online , and evrysingle store is in Preorder State , which means no stock yet I bought the Display Model , because the store didnt have any stock , and apparently the clerks , didnt realize what was happening , ..................... I have the Tascam before anyone else did , and I was also the first person to do an actual hand on review .......... on the planet . Whoa ............... ,,,, well there went my "15 minutes" if anyone knows that reference
A440
Can you elaborate a little more on using the Tascam for both home/studio and concert recording? How are the line-in and mic-in inputs? How convenient is the interface?Have you checked out battery life? Is there any kind of remote control? Andy Warhol wants to know.... Strungup
ask and ye shall recieve http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?s=&am...st&p=131961Line in is VERY good , the MP3 encoder , is extremely clean ( in fact I have never heard a 128 bit MP3 sound as good ) Mic is a little weak , the AT-822 just isnt breathing like it should , the one I tried in the music store seem better ( probably just because it was a noisy environment ) The Mono MIC2 input is one of the best Unbalanced inputs I have heard , usually unbalanced ins lack detail and warmth , as well as gain . I could be happy just using the Mic2 input , It also accesses the Reverbs , and other effects that are system wide, the Limiter and Low cut is not accessible thru Mic2 , or the line input . No Remote ........ doesnt need one , Controls are intuitive ( with the exception of the Rec Level wheel ( a little thin and wimpy ) my only gripe really is the Mic 1 / Internal mic processor , on the post I linked to scroll down to #5 or so , there are two sound samples in mono where I speak to left and right mics individualy and use reall good phones and listen closely , the bass is different in the left and right sides , and it affects both the Input , and the internal mics ........... odd , it is more noticable when you use the low cut filter .Batt life , is pretty good , used it all day yesterday , sample this record that , listen to this , repeat that etc , did line out and headphone out the Headphone Line out is Noisy( when recording) , a LOT of white noise , but when I play the recorded file on something else the noise isnt there . For line level recordings it was not noisy at all Edited February 25, 2008 by Guitarfxr
