About the RH1

Topic says it all. I noticed sometimes it's close or even slower than real time playback. I am happy with the unit, but I was wondering if it's just my unit, the disc, or if it's normal for this model to upload that slow.

Please let me know, as it may impact my decision of keeping the unit, or selling it and getting cheaper HI-MD units for my project.

Remember that there is no true SP codec on the PC (due to Dolby patent issues IIRC), so the RH1 is spitting out PCM data via USB, that is either being recorded as PCM by SonicStage or encoded as Hi-SP, depending on your settings.

Point being, with SP the unit isn't simply copying the Atrac data over, as it does with the other formats. So naturally this takes longer than other transfers because of the decoding to PCM and possible encoding to Hi-SP.

From my experience even though it takes longer than other formats, it is still faster than a real-time recording.

Just a thought, but Syrius might have the Save in Wav format upon uploading box ticked in the Transfer options dialog. I remember I had this at one time and wondered why it took so long. An extra .wav file is created in a separate folder which is handy, but obviously this adds extra time to the process, and probably increases the chances of a crash. Worthwhile checking anyways...

Actually, I am importing in Hi-SP and takes close to 15 percent longer than real time to upload. I would have been happy if it was 1.5 speed, but I can't upload faster than 80% of real time speed.

Maybe by saving to wav it will avoid having to re-encode to HI-SP on the fly, which may be making it slower. I'll try both ways, so thanks for these, and any further replies.

Wizard, my computer is a dual core Centrino laptop, with full USB 2.0 and no hub in between.

Well, I just did a test, and it takes between 40 to 50% longer than real time. I tried with a 10-sec track, and it took around 14.5 secs to upload it. I disabled my antivirus, and only had firefox and Yahoo Messenger running at the same time on a 1.8 Ghz dual-core Centrino laptop with 1 GB of ram... 2X upload would have been dreamy.

Ah...

What a disappointment.

It had no tabs. I'll do the following. I will disconnect the laptop from the net, turn off firewall and AV, and shut down every redundant process. Then upload. And see what it does.

If no improvement, then I'll get rid of it and buy two NH700s or three NH600 (no D-models)

Good thinking. I'll try in my old Athlon desktop. I'll let you all know tomorrow.

EDIT: I tested again on my laptop with only Firefox and Sonic Stage open. No firewall, no antivirus. No other programs running.

7 full minutes to upload a 6:30 track. Shameful.

I'll try on my desktop this time. After I'm done uploading my last batch of SP-encoded tracks, I am sticking to HI-SP and PCM for the rest of my life.

Well, guess what. The humble desktop outdid the newer, higher-spec laptop. Probably the dual cores mess up something, or it's not powerful enough, or something. But my 1.8 Ghz desktop outperformed the 2.2 Ghz laptop... at a blazing 6X upload speed. A six-minute track uploaded in 58 seconds, from the moment I hit the transfer button (so if we include the time the unit takes to spin the disc up and seek the right track, it's a bit faster than 6X) so I might end up keeping this. :give_heart2:

6X speed... wow. Wow-bow-wow-wow. :shok:
