bobt
Does the unit give you any error messages? Does it play a disc? Sometimes if you take the battery out for an hour or so the unit will reset itself. If not, it may need to go to the service centre, no big deal, ipuddles break too.Bob
Avrin
This sounds like the ribbon cable going to the magnetic overwrite head is broken (this is the weakest part of any [Hi]MD recorder/downloader). A service center will hardly be able to fix it, since they are only capable of replacing parts these days, and the OWH part for the NH1 is out of production for quite a few years. Although some people have actually fixed this problem by soldering very thin wires in place of the broken cable. Try to find one of those people. Here's a great description of the process: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=4712 Edited May 7, 2008 by Avrin
joseph
thanx bobt, no error messages - delete or record just freezes around 69% everytimeit will still play my discs though - yay!ill try the battery thing... didnt realise it would take an hour to resetthanx too Avrin, i hope it is not the ribbin cable, i suspect that you may be right thoughi may stick to play only in preference to breaking it entirely by opening it up and fiddling! THIS SUCKS
if the ribbon cable was bad it will still erase the disk! i had a bad ribbon cable on 2 of my units before . it erases the disk but cant re-write it. put the disk in and hook up the usb check to see if sonic stage will allow you to rename a track. if not the write protect tab indicator in the unit is broken or struck. Avrin
If the ribbon cable is broken, there is absolutely no way to modify the disc. This even prevents the unit from uploading already recorded discs, since it has to write some DRM atavisms to them.On the other hand, if the ribbon cable is not broken completely, but is just beginning to break, it may still be possible to erase the disc (since not much information is being written in the process), but not possible to record anything properly. THIS SUCKS
not true! if you cut the ribbon cable on the unit then try to erase the dick the laser will heat the md surface which will auomaticly erase the disk then the magnetic head will be missing so you will have no new data written to the disk. this will cause the disk to be blank i have done it before. maybe someone on the forum can try this on their broken unit to verify it really does erase the disk. i installed a new record head on the unit i cut the cable on so i cant do it again. Avrin
Simply heating the recording layer to its Curie point is not enough to change its magnetic properties - it will retain the magnetic direction it had before heating.

THIS SUCKS
i know you are Russian and therefore must know everything! funny! next time you have a broken unit try what i said and you will see that your disk is blank!!!! that only reason i am sure is that i did it already... one thing i am not sure of is if it will have the same effect on a hi-md disk. i have only done this on standard disks.
