Macintosh doesn't show Hi-MD icon

I am trying to download from a Hi-MD MZ-RH1 to my Mac (OS X version 10.4.11). However, when I attach the MZ-RH1 to my Mac using the USB cable, the desktop doesn't show an icon for the machine. I have Hi-MD Music Transfer (version 2.0) installed, but it says "Device/media not connected." The MZ-RH1, meanwhile, is in "PC--MD" mode, so it *should* show up on the desktop, no? I can't download if the computer doesn't give me an icon to click on—help!!

We had this problem on one of our macs and all we had to do was use a different USB port... Worth a shot!

Thanks a lot, raintheory! I spent several days installing the software on computers at work (and used various USB ports), though, and it didn't work on any of them. The Sony machine bought by our department was purchased from Japan and the downloaded software was from the US, so maybe there's some incompatibility there. Thanks again, though.

Hi,

You may have already solved your problem. But, just wanted to confirm that the Hi-MD to Mac transfer only works in conjunction with a Hi-MD recording (on a Hi-MD disc).

My MZ-RH1 shipped with a regular disc, and didn't show up as an external device. After I switched to a Hi-MD disc, it showed up no problem.

Hello everyone! Thanks a lot for your tips. I still haven't been successful, but akdn1 says, it might be because I was trying to download an MD using the Hi-MD machine. I didn't know that the MZ-RH1 could only download material recorded in Hi-MD mode. Can old MD machines (not Hi-MD machines) record in Hi-MD mode?

Hi again.

I did a little searching around, as I'm still working this all out for myself.

As well as the thread johnwesleybarker indicated above, the answers to your questions can be found here.

In short:

With a MZ-RH1, a Mac, and the Hi-MD Music Transfer software, you can only do MZ-RH1 ---> Mac transfers of Hi-MD recordings (so your old discs will not show up).

You can also do Mac ---> MZ-RH1 transfers of regular MP3s (by dragging the files out of your iTunes folder into the Hi-MD Music Transfer window).

Old MD devices do not record in Hi-MD mode.

Hope I've got my facts straight.

PS: Does your Mac have the Boot Camp application? If so, and if it's really important for you to be able to transfer old MD recordings, you can install Windows as a second operating system, then use the fully-featured SonicStage software. Just a thought.
