nlindquist
Ok, I just got the MZ-EP11 mini disk player to replace the one that got melted by my idiotic friend (no more needs to be said on that)For starters my previous mini disk player was a MZ-NE410 (if you need all the spec and info on that you can go to this link ( http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NE410.html )Anyway I just got my new player in, MZ-EP11 and guess what, none of my old mini disks will play on it! I don't know if this is a quirk or set this way by sony to be annoying but is there anywayI can get my minidisks to play? I don't have the backups on my comp anymore and the music is stuck on those disks. I don't see why there should be any problem since I used sonic stage to recordall my previous music. What can I do? sfbp
Sadly, no. Your MZ-NE410 supported LP2 and LP4 (I never actually tried putting SP on it). But the EP11 predates MDLP, LP2, LP4, NetMD, etc etc. So it will not ever. But you can easily pick up another NE410 or one of the many players that support MDLP.Good luck! nlindquist
Thank you for your quick responseI guess this brings up the question, do you know of any stand alone mini disk recorder that will record in many different formats of my choosing? or do you know of any way to transfer my old mini disk music back to my pc?As all things go mini disk will continue to evolve as will music formats and it's going to prove very annoying if every time I need a new mini disk player all my old mini disks are defunked and have to be trashed. raintheory
By standalone, do you mean a MiniDisc deck or a portable? The Rh1/M200 is the only unit that will transfer digitally/faster than realtime the "legacy" formats (SP/MONO/LP2/LP2) to PC. Along these lines, you cannot transfer NetMD recordings made via OpenMG/SonicStage, even with the RH1/M200 (there is a way around this, but it involves a hack, TOC cloning, which is another can of worms and a fairly difficult endeavor).See here regarding uploading, etc:http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070 Edited July 3, 2008 by raintheory
sfbp
There's actually one more way. You can get an MDLP deck (JE480,JE640,JB980) with digital out and transfer at playback speed into your computer. (don't tell me it doesn't work... I just checked, and I can indeed play netMD recordings from my 640 into the Toslink input on my sound card). The only problem with your recordings (and possibly one of the reasons Sony disabled this, though their overwhelming motivation continues to be seen as protection of copyright) is that they are in a lossy format.I would be inclined to get some player that has LP support, at least you can listen to them without any further degradation. For archival purposes, it's probably too late, as what is saved on the MD's you have simply isn't good enough quality. If you are really desperate, you can use analog out but you have to find something that will play them first. When you eventually get Sonic Stage going again, I strongly recommend exporting every single file (that isn't straight off a CD) into WAV format, and saving that.Stephen
raintheory
@sfbp:Yes, I always forget about the optical-out method. I used it for a few years myself before the RH1.
nlindquist
By standalone, do you mean a MiniDisc deck or a portable? ( I mean a unit that I could set on my desk )The Rh1/M200 is the only unit that will transfer digitally/faster than realtime the "legacy" formats (SP/MONO/LP2/LP2) to PC. Along these lines, you cannot transfer NetMD recordings made via OpenMG/SonicStage, even with the RH1/M200 (there is a way around this, but it involves a hack, TOC cloning, which is another can of worms and a fairly difficult endeavor).I don't know if I understood correctly what you said above so I will clarify. What I'm looking for is a unit, (size doesn't matter) and it is simply a mini disk recorder that will take music from my comp and record into any mini disk format there is. I would rather not get rid of this mp3 player but if I upgrade to another eventually I want a recorder that can switch formats.See here regarding uploading, etc:http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=7070
