orguss
Hi all, recently SS4.3 on my Vista could no longer transfer tracks to my MZ-N1. I never have any problems before hand. I checked and tried recording audio from both the mic and optical cable without any problem. Could it be SS4.3? After re-installing SS4.3, and I'm still not able to transfer any track.....Hmmm. If recording using the mic and optical cable not showing any problem, I'm sure the hardware itself should be working fine. I tried cleaning the USB connectors on both player and the docking station, but still nothing helps.Tried using new MD media, playing it with fresh battery and the usual cleaning of the lens too. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Edited September 19, 2008 by orguss
Avrin
Looks like a software glitch. May be a complete SS reinstall will help.

sfbp
Isn't the MZ-N1 the machine that might offer real SP downloads? In which case, you need an OLD version of SS, instead of a new one. by "old" I mean something closer to the age of the N1.Perhaps you are expecting to do Standard Play (SP) downloads, and the most recent SS (with their "Fake LP2" version) don't allow that.I know, we've talked about this Avrin, but at the time I suggested the very earliest NetMD machines might be interesting for this reason. Of course, I don't even have one. How to diagnose this?Stephen

How to diagnose this?StephenHi Stephen, I have been recording in LP2 mode all along using SS 4.3 from my XP platform from 2006 to 2007 till early 2008 when upgraded to Vista without any problem. The problem started when MS installed a few updates including the Vista SP1 (not sure whether is this the cause or not). Do you suggest that I start recording in SP mode? Any recommendation on which version of SS should be used on Vista to work with the N1? BTW, just tried using SS4.2, and the transfer stuck at 95% too. The only way to stop the transfer is to reboot the whole PC, since the 'Stop' function on SS will not terminate the transfer Edited September 19, 2008 by orguss
sfbp
It does seem that some update of Vista (may I guess some security/encryption issue?) killed SS. Thank goodness I never even tried it.SP on current machines is known to be "Fake SP" - and you cannot upload SP from MZ-N1 (though the RH1 will do that for you nicely). So I don't think that gets you anything. Unless you have an OLD version (pre Vista, almost pre-XP) of the software that ORIGINALLY came with the N1. I'm thinking maybe there WAS a way to get real SP onto MD with the oldest units.

Can you explain this a little further...or give a link to an thread on this?
sfbp
Just search here for "fake SP"
Avrin
Somehow I don't think is has ever been possible to download real SP. AFAIK, the entire problem arose because Dolby Laboratories never allowed SONY to create a computer SP codec (SP is based on several Dolby patents). And I don't think that old SS actually downloaded WAV or PCM to older machines (to encode to SP in the unit), since it would have taken ages at their speeds (maybe even longer than realtime).
