Rockbox on Sony HD5

Question

Ok, is this even possible? How difficult would it be to take down the HD5s firmwire? Sonys known to be almost as limiting as apple when it comes to mp3 players, for example, the fact that they never implemented a 5band EQ on mp3s, however they did for atrac (unforgiveable).

So, again, is it possible?

For those of you who dont know what it is, its changing the UI and GUI as well as other capabilities (OGG support for example) by using different firmwire. Here are some sample of the GUIs found on other DAPs using rockbox:

I don't know if the lack of EQ on MP3 files is so much a constraint made by Sony rather than a limitation of the design of the decoder or at least their implementation of it.

Whether that is possible or not, at current time I'm assuming it hasn't been done given you're asking the question, LOL. It isn't likely I don't think. As I always say the iPod is the Honda Civic of MP3 players, so people/companies will always be making products for it, hacking it etc. Sony players on the other hand have very little "aftermarket" and it is not that likely that anyone will spend their time "hacking" an HD5... Especially considering the HD5 has been long discontinued and, in the US, Sony doesn't even have a current HDD based DAP on the market.

That said, the processor in the HD1/3/5 (all the same main processor) is quite powerful [in terms of it's compressed audio decoding ability] and power efficient. I would imagine if people could write a firmware/OS for it, they could do a lot. I'm not sure about the ICs the iPod uses but Sony's CXR704060-201GA Main System Controller IC is definitely a proprietary processor and therefore I doubt Sony would have any imformation available in regard to it's operation.

Something tells me that even if you did have a firmware to upload to the player that you would need to be able to digitally sign it otherwise the player will just spit it right back out.

I've been kinda hoping rockbox comes out for the nw-a3000 but I know its not gonna happen.
