Mac user: record, download, and record back to MD?

I use my MD MZ RH1 to record practice sessions (cello, viole da gamba). I sometimes record the bass line of a duet piece and then listen to it from the MD to practice the melody, or have a partner record one or the other parts for my use. This is a tremendously helpful use of this machine.

Oftentimes, the recordings are made at different times and become spread out across multiple groups and finding them is not always easy to do. It can be very inconvenient to shuffle the tracks around with the RH1's editing facility. I would like to be able to download these tracks to the Mac, rename them, and remix them to either the same disk or another one to make these recordings more useful and practical.

I have tried to upload tracks to the MD but have not been able to do so.

It would be great to be able to make playlists as well of pieces of music to listen to for enjoyment as well without having to use the time-consuming analog method, besides which, being able to easily build playlists would make the device much more versatile and enjoyable.

Is there software to accomplish this--or have I just been unable to find it in the Mac SonicStage?

I'm a little late replying on the subject of the MD transfer 2.0 for Mac...it isn't working out at all. As the instructions go, I deleted the ver. 1.0 and downloaded 2.0. It works sort of, but only to download to the Mac and nothing else.

Meanwhile, I want to compress the sound files to mpegs rather than wav so I can email them. Apparently this requires additional software than comes with my version of OSX 10.4.11.

Being barely literate computer-wise, I would be thankful for some suggestions.

The purpose behind this effort is to share some recordings with a friend who is blind. She lives on a small island and to share the sounds available here in the USA as well as elsewhere I have travelled would open her world. One thing I have in mind is to make more binaural recordings. I have an old JVC set that I put a 1/8 miniplug on to attach to the mic input--not the greatest but it is fun, as it has a headphone so when you are using it, and play it back, it's just about impossible to tell if you are recording or hearing what is going on around you in real time. Like, is that a train going by now, or did it already?

Kind of digressing here. Anyway if I could have some advice as to what I need, it would be great. thanks

For MD users who want to do the same but do not own an MD Transfer 2.0 or HiMD deck there is another way:

  • MD deck - Standard or MDLP with TOSLINK/Optical IN/OUT jacks.
  • A Mac with TOSLINK IN/OUT port like the latest Mac mini or Aluminum iMacs and ProMacs.
  • Audio Capture software of your choice on the Mac.
  • Record digitally into the Mac HD.
  • Then playback with software of your choice with Optical cable out to in of a fresh new MD deck and that should do it. Keeps it all digital.
