NW-HD3 changed battery, cable broken :-(

Hi!

I changed the battery of my NW-HD3, everything is fine, it works, but when you put the akku/battery out, there is no way that the cable from the buttons on the up-sides "cuts off" it is not damaged. I am not a pro and I am happy the akku/battery works, I hope to get it work again with a remote control like the RGTM-MC40ELK. (This should work although the controls on the upside arent connected?)

Anyway, does someone know if my problem is fixable? I loved my player, but it is dead now. I can turn it on when I press of of the buttons on the upside, but I only see the display, I can't let it play. I can even change the volume, but I cant hear anything. If this piece would directly start with PLAY, i could have used it that way... Sad situation.

The prices for the remote are a joke. I will 100% not spend 100$ or anything like this for a remote.

SONY are ********, if you change the battery and you dont know how the thing looks inside the cable cuts off and you have my problem.

OK, if anyone has my problem, too and knows a solution please please help!

I will try to speak better english now ;-)

The picture does not freeze, with the buttons on the "up" side I can change the menu, turn the unit on and off, go to the folder menu, artist menu. With the Volume buttons on the up I can change the volume. But when I changed the akku the cable of the forward/rewind,play/pause cross in the middle of the unit is off. When you open the unit it happens, the cable is not connected.

i can charge the NW-HD3, I see what is on it, I can go to the menus, I can do everything I can do with the buttons on the upside, the buttons in the cross in the middle of the NW-HD3 are "dead"

I cant play a song. If there is any cheat how to make the unit play without the cross in the middle on the frontside of the unit, please tell me. The remote control is too expenisve ( I saw it for 99$ ), a remote control just with a play button would be enough for me. Perhaps there are other Remotes I can use?

Well,front buttons are connected via thin wire(circuit one ) that needs to be inserted into board before closing up the unit .Its little tricky .I will try to post the pictures of my HD3 ,to help you out .

Can anyone help me please? I also seem to have fallen into the same trap. After years of enjoyment, the battery in my NW-HD3 finally died. I got a new one for under a tenner, and from browsing various techy websites, got the impression that the process of replacing it was straight forward, and I suppose it was buuuuttttttt.......

After removing the screws from the outer body, I carefully slid the unit out from it's cover until I could clearly access the battery. At no time did I experience excessive resistance yet I noticed afterwards that the ribbon cable which connects the controls on the front panel to the main board had become detached. With the length of this cable, it looks impossible to remove the unit as described without this happening!

Of course, now the unit works but the main controls on front are dead. Is there any way I can re-attach to main board? Do I admit defeat and have the repair done professionally?

I know have suffered the same fate. I don't even know why, the ribbon cable is glued to the casing to stop accidental tugs. After replacing the battery I found that I could not get the system to detect the control buttons on the front. There must be an issue with the cable or it is loose and on top of that the piece of plastic that helps hold the cable end into the board is is loose so now the cable is "too thin" to stay in the board socket.

I'm just going to have to use my remote until either the battery goes or the hard drive fails, whichever comes first.

Maybe in the future I might get a 2nd hand unit and change the exterior shell.

Issue I had was even when it was firmly in it's slot, it wasn't working. I think the cable may have "slipped" out of place under the control buttons themselves. It will be a pain to try and fix this, fiddly work. When I have some patience, I will probably take the entire front panel apart and check the cable fully.

I hate issues with ribbon cables, had this issue with my Sony MZN1 recorder when the cable for read/write head developed a break. Took ages to fix.

Shame too because I have opened my unit before and had zero issues getting everything working last time

Well progress, I took about 30 mins of solid testing and found upon puttng the cable on an angle, it works fine. I need to find something to stick onto the back of the cable end to make thick in the socket to make a consistent connection. Not gonna be easy as the access space is tiny

Hi, I have the same issue in that I need to replace the battery in my NW-HD3 but am finding it difficult even to get the internals to slide out of the case. I am then worried that the control cable that others have mentioned will detach and the unit become unusable. Did one of the forum members get around to posting the photos of the process? If not, can you describe how to replace the battery safely? Thanks.

I never resolved mine as my socket clip on the board is too loose to keep the ribbon in place. My only two options are to either slip something behind the cable to keep it in place or use blu-tack which seemed to fix some members issues on another forum.

The forum with the pictures only has the initial steps but the host for his images have removed the images so I cannot visually see the entire process.

The process starts with the two screws at the bottom. The grey base plate should come off. Then the plastic on the left should come off gently. There will be two screws holding the internals inside that need to be removed. Gently slide the internals North looking from the front of the unit. For the very first time I opened my unit back in 2005 it took a fair bit of force but when I opened it recently it was quite easy. The issue is for me that cable for the cross key had a tiny piece of cable holding it in. Upon removal that came off, seems it was glued when I sent it in for repair under the Sony recall. This has made the cable "too thin" to stay inside the slot thus making it difficult on keeping a consistent placement where all 5 buttons on the front work.

If the cable has a long brown backing to it, then it should be easy to reinsert afterwards.

Once it's removed, you should be able to slide the internals right out. To remove the battery, there will be a white plug for the cable to the motherboard that should be gently removed. A single screw will at the top left of the battery looking from the top of the internals should be removed, it will allow you to pick up the small metal base plate holding the battery. My original battery was quite well glued onto this board so I ended up bending mine upon removal. A hammer should help flatten it out.

Place the new battery against this plate and reattach the cable and screw. Then reassemble the unit in reverse of the steps noted above, so after the battery is in place slide the internals back in until there is about 1.5 cm gap allowing the cross-key ribbon cable to be reinserted into its slot. Then slide the internals right down, two screws on the left go back into place. The small plastic goes over the screws and then the base plate is reattached to the shell and two screws hold it back in place.

Luckily for me I still have the MC40 remote so I'll continue to use that to control the unit. When I have some extended free time I will disassemble the unit and see if I can get the cable to stay flat in it's socket.
