DAT to M-M200

Hey there. I have been using MD since 1997. I have a MZ-M200 and I cannot seem to get it to work with a Sony PCM-R300 (Digital Audio Tape).

Here is the issue. I am trying to offload several recordings made on DAT. I have my SPDIF (optical) connection made from the DAT to the MZ-M200. No issues there. I can record normally, but I am not getting automatic track marks! I cannot even manually insert them during the recording. All of the other MD units that I have can take the relayed track mark info and place a track mark when it is passed. I am using digital sync and track marks are turned on. Time mark is off. SCMS is 00 (Allow all copies). I sure would like to use the MZ-M200 so that I have PCM rather than having to use some of my old style MD units. Any advice with passing track marks? This is driving me crazy. Any help is certainly appreciated.

I can record these DATS to CD using my CD-recorder, but I do not want to do that since I am dealing with 90 minute recordings. BTW the CD recorder takes the track marks! Frustrating...

SYNC REC is actually required to accept trackmarks from CDs (not sure about DATs).

In any case, don't forget that a PCM copy recorded by an RH1 via optical in will not be bit-perfect (there will be a slight drop of highest frequencies, leading to rounding errors and decreasing the quality). The only way to get bit-perfect PCM on a Hi-MD unit is via USB.

Yeah, I had a look at the manual after giving my initial response. But there's something funny there. I recall exactly the same thing, some combination of record settings that did strange things.

Try all the setting combo's, starting from "all features off" and I think you'll find the one that works. Another symptom of this "neverland" was that I couldn't change the microphone recording level.

Okay anyone else out there using a non-cd source going to the Hi_md unit via digital cable and having issue with track marks?

Just tested RH1 with CD and MD, both cases track marks are inserted flawlessly. I haven't anything else except maybe a DVD but the tracks (on most DVD's) are a bit long.

Maybe it's something about the output of the DAT which is a bit different?

One more thing: SYNC REC was "Off". I think for digital signals it matters not, that setting only applies to Analog Line in or Mic.
