Conversion Problems Sony - Tascam

Hey Friends. My Tascam MD-301 mk-II won't play MD's created by transferring material from my computer to my Sony NetMD MZ-NE410. It will display the titles of the songs, but it won't play them. It will however, play songs that it recorded, as well as some stuff from other MD's I have that I did not create. I am a bit new to using MD's, and it is likely that their is some basic concept for file types that I don't know. I love this format for my studio! I could use any information, or direction to any resources to help me understand the MD compatibility of these two devices. Thanks!

Please sir, please sir (puts hand up) I can do that one!

Sorry but you have tried to play an MDLP track on a unit that is only SP-capable. It dates from before MDLP was introduced I think, whereas more recent Tascam decks full support the Atrac3 data rates (LP2 and LP4) and compression schemes.

Thanks for the quick reply. So my Sony is using MDLP (as it states on the front), and that model Tascam cannot read that format. Is there anyway to make them compatible? Or is time to sell that MD player and uprgade to MDLP.We have established that the Tascam won't read the MDLP format. I get that. How about backward compatibility? If I record them on the Tascam, will the MDLP type machines read them? I am using these for radio work, so I need them to be compatible with any machine I encounter at the station. Thanks again friend!

1. Anything recorded by a pre-MDLP machine can be played back on an MDLP one.

2. You may use your MZ-NE410 to transfer songs in fake SP mode, so they will be playable by the Tascam (and anything else), but the quality will suffer, since music is actually transferred in LP2 and then converted (lossy-to-lossy) to SP by the unit.
