doylekm
I took my MZ-NH900 minidisc recorder out for the first time in while and found that the battery was dead. The unit worked fine off mains power but no battery charge showed on the display and removing the mains turned the unit off. I ordered a new battery (generic replacement for NH-10WM gumstick) and received this today. However, putting this in the machine makes no difference - still no battery power showing with or without mains power and no charging taking place after 30m attached to the mains. The old battery does not show any signs of leaking and I'm at a loss at what else to try. Could the battery circuit have somehow become broken? I'd be very grateful for any ideas. Thanks! I looked closely at the terminals and there was some gunk on one part of the connector. Cleaned that away and now its charging fine. Just wish I'd thought of asking before I went and bought another battery! Thanks again.

Mine has been in the same condition for a very long time - it is now an attractive ornament. I had the "expanding battery" problem a long time ago and had to use pliers to get the battery out, which probably screwed everything up. Are the terminals on the bottom of the battery compartment or the top? I've tried to peer in there with a flashlight but couldn't really see anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. sfbp
The plus is at the end closest to the outside world. You should check the state of that which touches the + terminal and that there's a connection through (via the hinge) to the rest. Getting the lid off isnt that hard using the service manual. There could be guck at both ends, ie the battery -ve too. A sharp knife applied to each end of the battery itself can be quite good at reestablishing a current path. Is this the only unit you have running on gumsticks? If not, there are lots of possibilities.... Stephen

Stephen No, I have an EH930 which I used to charge Gumsticks after the demise of my 900 - at this point though, I think I need new Gumsticks. Just hesitant to invest the $$ because of the issues with the 900. I've basically switched to Net MD and old SP units because they use AAs - and use NH-1 for HiMD - but I still have a soft spot for the 900 because it was the first "higher end" unit I purchased. Plus I always liked the dial, and the sound. When I get home (on vacation) I will have a go at the 900. Thanks.
