Hi all here, I have a Sony MZ-N7707 Net MD player and would like to know if I can use this player with Win 7 64bit Ultimate, if so where can I obtain the drivers from.

I do have Sonic Stage already installed but when I connected my MZ-N707 I get an error telling me Drivers Not Found.

Thanks

You need to have the Pro or Ultimate version of Windows 7 with the XP mode VM components installed. You then install SonicStage in the XP VM, you'll have full access to NetMD devices at that point.

Ok I am using Win 7 Ultimate 64bit though, so your saying I cant use it just as is on Win 7 64bit

You have to install it into the 32-bit subsystem. I'm not sure exactly how you do this, but someone with W64 will tell us. If I was trying it, I would try to get a virtual desktop that was Windows XP (this is what the 32-bit system is).

If the Sonic Stage installer thought it actually was talking to XP the drivers would install nicely. The program itself presumably already running in the 32-bit subsystem. To install "just" the drivers from the install package may be hard, Avrin here will know exactly what to do (haven't seen him here much lately). There may be others who have accomplished the trick.

Alas, I lack experience as I desire neither a 64 bit system, nor W7 to run it, at least YET. It runs fine under "real" W7-32.

Ok so it looks like I cant use it with Win 7 64bit, I have got a Win XP PC as well 32bit, that might be a better alternative, though my main PC is the Win 7 64bit one. Also have another laptop using Win 2000 Pro so even that might help.

In addition to having the Ultimate 64 bit version of Windows 7, you need to have a minimum of 3GB RAM in the machine and a CPU capable of supporting true hardware based virtualization. I had to enable this capability in the BIOS of my Dell Latitude with a T7600 Core 2 Duo chip. If you are running the 64 bit version of Windows 7, you should be fine regarding the virtualization support.

The XP mode is not a 32 bit subsystem, it is a new 64 bit version of Windows Virtual PC in which you install a full version of Windows 32 bit XP SP3. The entire setup is download-able from Microsoft with directions here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/get-started.aspx

You'll have to verify your installation of Windows 7 as genuine.

I have performed the operation and it works great. Microsoft has done a great job of making this one of the fastest VMs I have used, the response time is very fast and this specific version with the XP download are made just for working with older legacy apps inside of Windows 7. I do not know if it is possible to create installations of other VMs for other OSes.

I use VMWare server on other machines and VMWare Fusion on a MacBook Pro and the new version of Virtual PC for Windows 7 is easily as fast and possibly more responsive than those others.

As Stephen mentions, there is supposed to be some support for MiniDisc and Windows 7 released sometime in he near future, what this support is, I can't say.

Having the ability to run XP in Windows 7 is nice but it is an aweful big waste of space. Good thing I just installed a Seagate Momentus 500GB drive!
