stahlhelm
Hi all, my beloved MD Walkman passed away so it is time to get another one. This time I want a better one and I would like to transfer .mp3 files to minidisc. What kind of MD Walkman should I look for? NetMD, HiMD or MDLP? These formats are new for me I can record only in standard MD format at the moment with my Sony MDS-JE500 deck. Thank you for your help Regards
sfbp
There's only one unit available for retail sale, the MZ-M200. This is the same as the MZ-RH1 with a microphone (that's not particularly good) added. Only second-gen HiMD units actually support MP3 on the disk. That's MZ-RH910/M10 and MZ-RH10/M100 in addition to the RH1. Sounds like you might have a lot of "old" MD's that at some point you want to upload to PC. Maybe the the RH1 is a good choice then. stahlhelm
I thought all NetMD walkman models are capable to receive .mp3 files from a PC and play those files back. Is that true? I keep my MDS-JE500 deck to record sessions from my analogue tuner I don't want to go on that to NetMD or HiMD.
stahlhelm
Native MP3 support and support after transcoding to ATRAC isn't the same. So no, not all MiniDisc Walkman models support MP3 as a direct transfer. However you can always convert via software the MP3 to ATRAC for the audio to be compatible, although at cost of even more degradation to the sound quality, lossy </=320kbps MP3 being already a degradation of the original lossless 1411kbps PCM/WAV. This shouldn't be a problem in my case because what I want to listen on the walkman is not music it is some lessons quality doesn't matter too much. How quick/slow is transferring mp3 files to Atrac in general?
sfbp
If you are "only" doing speech I personally recommend a non-MD. The speech on the Sony ICD-SX700,750,850,950 is BETTER than on minidisc. And it takes MP3 files with drag and drop as well as being quite a nice little music player. If you're not already wedded to MD, then try this instead. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICD-SX750-Memory-Digital-Recorder/dp/B00387E5D0 And if you want to transcribe notes to text there is a slightly more expensive SX750D which includes the Dragon voice recognition software, which those who have used it (I am not one) say is excellent. This is an excellent device, and I am speaking as a bit of an audiophile (I actually listen to music on mine). It accepts most MP3s without conversion, Linear PCM and has its own extra longplay codecs ("LPEC") which can easily be converted on the PC to something more familiar, using their software. 100% drag and drop, no DRM, and no complex program to learn. It even has 3 microphones and a small speaker built in. For that price you can't improve, given what I think are your parameters. Good luck (it may be a bit more outside USA but still worth every penny).
stahlhelm
Thank you for all of your comments folks I am a bit wise now. I think I'll stick to MD because I simply like this format. After compact cassette it was heaven!!! Hopefully a last question: when I transfer my .mp3 files from PC to Atrac can I do it in LP mode to save some space on the disc? P.s.: I use still the good old Win XP
