MD - PC w/ no line in!

Greetings, thank God this place exist, MD still rocks... anyways...

My Hi-MD should be here tomorrow, can't wait to mess w/ that, but before I shelled out the cash for that, I needed a way to put my old MD's on my PC.

Only thing is, these new laptops do not CARRY THE LINE IN JACK ANYMORE.

Had to figure something out... have a DVD recorder, can do up to six hour on that, so it was MD Audio out - DVD rec in, plus the vid sig form a portable DVD player. Finalize, back into PC, rip the audio with DVDFAB via .wav or 192 KBPS mp3 depending on the material.

Not nearly as good as that option, I actually got a little iriver E100, with line in. Highest quality is 192 kbps WMA+ via line in, down to 96 kbps.

For stuff like old talk radio, 128 kpbs is perfect, and you get like 68 hours on the devices built in 4 gb hd. 192 I think gives you 45 hours or so.

Problem with the iriver is that there is a slight squeal when you put it on line in rec, no matter what the source... a little disappointing, but once I uplaoded them back into the PC, I didn't hear anything... doesn't mean it's not there, although I did put the file in Audution and didn't see any anomolies, but w/e...

Any other methods to transfer MD to PC with no line in? Until I purchased my hi-md, I was seriously considering a stand alone CD recorder... but couldn't find ANYTHING at a reasonable price point...

I have cool little Creative Labs external Sound Blaster device which provides far superior sound via USB connection to the laptop. The model I have has optical line in/out as well as analog. To XP it looks like any other sound card. I don't think they are manufactured any longer, but there are some on eBay: Creative Labs External SB - USB

I am sure there are other manufacturers as well.

Thanks for the info, will most def have to acquire one of these, and they're pretty inexpensive aswell

I honestly don't know if I would trust the ANALOG input on this.

So what you now need (to do really good A->D) is a nice Sony MD deck with digital out. Put it into A-to-D mode by pressing Record and feed the output of the deck to the little device that goes to your USB on the laptop.
