Don't get me wrong, I don't recommend getting a PSP, just to play Atrac files. It's a pretty good mp4 player, beautiful picture viewer, the games absolutely blow, and you can find a used one @ a half way decent price now.
The other day i tried using my PSP with my Atrac fles, created with my RH-910. Worked like a charm. Only issue is, yes, do you do have to use Sonicstage. It sets up some proprietary coding and naming system on the PSP, very similar to what the files on an ipod look like, when you attempt to look t it's folder view.
But the audio plays great. Gapless, I \have a PSP -2001, whcih has an optional line out. Attatched to my A/V system, the audio is good, depending on the bitrate and and what you're trying to listen to.
I know sometimes it can be a pain in the neck to play these damn Atrac files outside of Sonicstage or an older Sony MP3 player... Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents on it. I'm actually quite impressed with the playback on this thing, it's loads easier than trying to use my D-NE1 to play Atrac files.
