Hey paperclip,

I don't know if you've seen this site, but you should check it out: Remote Central. I used to frequent the site when I had and used a Philips Pronto remote. You may be able to find the software and drivers you are looking for there, it's a cool community.

On another note, I had one of the ancestors of the remote you got, it was not nearly as cool as your model, but still a cool Sony with the large back-lit touch screen, very cool. This was back in the late 1980's maybe 88 or 89! It's amazing that Sony has continued this line and made it so much more useful with USB based programming.

I got the remote working the basics late last night, thanks for the help. I really think I'm going to like this thing. I think one of the best features is going to be the timer function. Now I can use the decks that don't have timer record, to record stuff when I want (mainly radio shows). The thing is huge though, make an Ipad look small :)

Pics to follow soon, I promise.

That's awesome pc. The timer idea is very cool too!

Sure is the same as our MD stuff, Steven! I think it's called mini-usb type b. I actually use the same cable for both the remote and my MD's so I'm 100 % on this.

I think the AX-3100 is the model with the timer feature one grade below the 4000 (other models lower in number don't have a timer). I think the reason I went with the 4000 is it can control more stuff. I'm still gettting used to it but now have most of it programmed for the simple decks. Still working on the D400, the CD section is tricky. I used it to edit a whole disc of radio recordings (JB940) and they way I have the buttons set up, I like it much better than the original remote. As big as the thing is it fits in the hand well. Not like a fine English double mind you but fine in it's own right.

Your question is a bit advanced for me. What I know at this point is it will learn just about anything, program variable pauses, and chain up to 4 commands.

I'm like a caveman when it comes to this stuff: I grunt and giggle just turning all the decks on and off with one button. I think it must be magic :)

Kind of like Phil Hartman as "The Caveman Lawyer"? LOL I suspect you are just slightly more advanced than that. ;-)

Just got mine. Established the basics - that it works, can learn at least one command that I set up using the computer, and can handle multiple devices.

Any advice, now you are an old hand? I came to the conclusion I should add devices with preprogrammed codes then change them after.

Is there any quick way to try all the suggested pre-programmed codes for a given device? Or is it all-or-nothing, and you have to go back and forwards? I guess I am going to have to run the editor and move the laptop into the tv room.

I haven't quite figured out how to set them up, but it looks like you can invent commands that you write on the LCD, so if there EXISTS some button with a name you've never heard of doing something completely new, it should be possible to come up with a screen display of that. But, as you, I am not that advanced yet.

I tried the 1.0 version and got very annoyed because it insisted on using the wizard and would not let me into "advanced" (to me much simpler) mode. 1.1 is better (the download). It definitely needs a note to help the driver installer find the RmAx.sys and .inf files - most users will have the CD and it can come from there, but if all you have is the download, you need to mess around until discovering where it unpacked that stuff to. Just as you noticed.

Also the way it switches between lists of things is a bit counterintuitive. Took me over an hour to realise why I could only see one device, because the others were on separate lines and I had to "page down" by pressing the "/1" at the top of the display.

Once I passed these initially insurmountable hurdles, all was much better. Looks like I could spend ("waste"?) a lot of time on this little beast.

I add the pre-programmed devices first then edit them from there. Took me a while to figure out that I need to save the project file AND download to the remote, to save all the changes.

I try to have the thing sitting on the coffee table next to the laptop. When I use a device (say JB940) I use the AX4000 to control it. If there is a function I need I use the original remote to learn the code needed. That way it isn't all programming and I have time to get it set just the way I like it. I actually like using this remote better than the originals. So yeah, I recommend you set up the laptop by the TV, for now

Some of the buttons on the LCD defy editing. If you figure that out let me know.

Would you care to amplify that remark? I don't seem to have a problem.

The biggest pain appears to be that there's no way of quickly trying a bunch of preprogrammed codes using a code number. Nearly all my devices ended up being programmed by learning each and every command. What I have *not* yet done is to chain them together (which was after all the point of all this) so that SO can point it at the whole mess and "just watch a movie".

Most things don't like the power switch the way it comes preprogrammed.

I managed to program a DVD region hack into the device by entering a bunch of codes and then replacing them by editing the file. It went through the motions but I am still no closer to having the hack working. I have a strong idea that I just don't know the right codes because several of the (ordinary) buttons that are supposed to be on my (original) remote that the hack requires, are not there. So it goes, I just don't have enough information.
