ajk0952
Hi Minidisc community! Special shoutout to sfbp(I think that's the correct username) & Avrin! Anyways, I have a brand new RM-MC38EL but after plugging it into my RH1 unit and the remote will only let me listen to music in only one earbud. It's frustrating because if I swiggle the endpiece connector to the left, it'll only spit out sound in only one earbud but the unit works great when I swiggle it to the right. It's been happening for awhile now. I bought this unit from pauseplaystop. I contacted them and did get reimbursed but I really want to fix this unit. It seems like a waste and I always try to repair things on my own. Don't really know why but I hate admitting defeat until I know exactly how big of a problem I have on my hands. That aside, anybody care to lend me some advice without telling me to return it or buy a new one? Thanks beforehand for reading this issue & hope to hear your comments soon! jim.hoggarth
The MC33L, MC33EL, MC38EL etc all suffer from the earphone socket being soldered directly onto the remote circuit board with relatively no other support. An unfortunate knock or bend on the earphone plug can cause enough twisting/shearing force to break the copper tracking pad that the socket is soldered on to. At the moment whenever I get this problem, board replacement is my solution. I have kept hold of all the damaged boards in case I think up a solution, but for now haven't bothered finding one. The problem is, so little copper is left on the board, resoldering is not practical. The solution will probably be to glue the socket back down and run very fine wire connections to the solder pads. But, as I say, it's one of those jobs that will just have to wait. Jim
sfbp
Sorry, I was thinking of the end that goes into the minidisc (RH1). The best thing you can do is buy a bunch of cheap replacements. They are not knockoffs, just "factory surplus" IMO, and should be fine. Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-Remote-control-RM-MC38EL-Hi-MD-HD5-N910-Silver-/140482712372 Another example: http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-Remote-control-back-light-RM-MC38EL-MD-HI-MD-/190502751788 I have never had this happen with either original or OEM (?copy?) versions. So it sounds like you must have given it a bit of a jerk. You might like to try and find the longer variety of earphones made by Sony. Just a word of caution on this - find (new or used) the ones with the gold 3.5mm plug. Until now, the ones with silver-coloured plug have been really bad news. With the longer earphone wire you are less likely to jerk the remote by mistake. Stephen
