I'm looking for MiniDisc display ideas

To mark the passing of MiniDisc next year, I was thinking about putting together a display to hang on my listening room wall.

I was thinking about putting together all the Sony blanks I have that are still in the wrapper, along with some print ads - so far. I am interested if anyone else had thought of something like this, maybe we could bounce ideas around? I haven't held any of the print ads in my hand, what I've seen so far, it's no wonder MD never took off here and I am thinking about making my own -using the style similar to the ATRAC stuff on Sony's website. Any feedback from those who remember the various print ads would really help. Of course I will post some pics once I get something to mock up, I think MD deserves to be shown off.

Thanks in advance!

If I was good on digital art maybe I would thought about something like the onemilliondollarhomepage pachwork, based on https://picasaweb.go...inidisc.channel pictures and make your giant MD blank poster !

More simply, you can also make your own MD pictures USB key screen saver and connect it to your home-theater LCD screen.

There are on the web very big size pictures of some famous unit. I don't know how much it will cost you to make a wood support (laminage in french) but here in Vietnal it is quit cheap. Even with white or black lacquer.

Some guys have done some arts for you on the web :

Thanks for the ideas, Slug. I never thought of "faceplates" - that is a great idea. Maybe I will ask the forum for broken portables?

PhilippeC, thanks for those pics - I've got some great ideas running around my head similar to those... I was thinking of some "glamour" shots of the more high-end units, in a staged setting.

Thanks again for the ideas, when I get something in the viewfinder I'll make sure to share, to see what you all think.

An idea. Find a big wooden panel in cork wood. On there you can easily fix your MD blanks between colored needles (I suppose than they will not fall after that, maybe there are L-needles that suited on the market?). And many pictures around a big MD logo. The MD logo can be printed on a white or black T-shirt... so you will had your hideous laugh.gif face, an old semi-headphones and any of your portable unit for a 3D effect !

Again that topic inspire me, exactly the same thing when The Wizzzzzzzzzzzard showed is wooden board.

If you remember...

And just talking about cork and board (not panel, board is the right word) make me think of vine cork board pictures on the web. So, knowing the diameter size of the vine cork (24mm in France, 26mm in Italy) and dimensions of a Minidisc box (77mm x 72mm x 7mm) that permit if the vine cork stand on his head

Horizontaly : a box is exactly as large as 3 french vine cork,

Verticaly (without pressure) : 3 MD = 21mm ~ 2mm less than 1 french vine cork / 10 MD = 70mm ~ 2mm less than 3 french vine cork, meaning every square of 3 x 3 french vine cork can hang 10 MD (I will get drunk easily at this count)

Now, if you miss of vine corks, you can lie them horizontaly and verticly too. As for standing vine corks, all will depend on their size (49mm or 44mm). And I believe, that will not be as easily as the standing mode.

Hips... Annndd mayyyybips the gentles MDsss are standing alone with viiiiine corkkkkkkoups with noooo gluuueee oups. Hips drinks.gif

Very cool ideas.

How about sharing the final product via hi res picture files?

CV

Not me in a short while as I am living in Vietnam and I don't even know how to find 200 wine crocks. I drink beer! Maybe I need to imagine something based on bottles or cans of beer ?

Or boxes of cigarettes (88mm x 55mm x 22mm) / matches ! Even cigars. Jesus I don't smoke too !

Design can look good with boxes of cigarettes. And interchangeable too !

All this will look like a Tetris game !

About the 3 french corks as large as a MD box, it is the MD itself. A MD is 70mm large, 72mm is the minimum for the comfort. If the MD is in his sleeve box with a 80mm size, 82mm is the minimum meaning it is more difficult to have it perfect. Maybe cutted corks or better some separators made in wood long as the board itself will arrange all.

Very close to my house (300m), there is a japan imported products shop called Hachi Hachi (www.hachihachi.com.vn).

This shop is very usefull. It full of cheap items, or sometimes rather expensive (compare to vietnamese common prices) but all with a very good quality and a typical japanese good taste in design.

I have found at the opening many plastic and wooden boxes (around 1,5 to 2,5$ each) for my MDs and my CDs. I noticed that their propose regularly similar replacement for any item so I come back twice a month to have a look.

Here is for example a display idea for our MDs :

This item (2,2$ a bag) is a plate / cup holder. It can be use as MD shelves, similar to The Wizard's idea (see my first post in this topic for pictures). I just need to shorten a little the two wooden rungs between ladders so that MD's sleeve boxes can hold on rungs. Every bag of 2 ladders can hold 35 MDs. Meaning this display will cost me 22$ to hold my entire MD collection. Sadly just found 4 of them in the shp close to my house but I am not that desperate, there are more than one Hachi Hachi shop in Saigon !

About that offer, how many broken ones do you have (list) ? I live in Vietnam, it is not so far from Australia for a cheap parcel.

I have LOTS!!! Maybe 30-40?

When I can find the time to make a list, are there any particular you want to know ie only Sony, all makers, mdlp, condition, etc?

:)

You have enough units to make your own little RIP museum !

But just an idea. Jim Hoggart in UK is a specialist of portable units and because of that he have a lot of spare parts. Maybe he is still looking for these spare parts. Why do you not ask him to receive all your units in a parcel, let him see if he is able to repair some or them, send them back to you or sell them for you, then keep the other ones for his payment ?

That is an excellent idea! I've been thinking of doing something like that. But I have A LOT of working ones too :) so I'm not too worried about getting them working.

I think those numbers are on the low side - my collection is all over the place ;) plenty to go round for everyone. What sort of units would you like?

:)

Like you can see in one of my recent topic, I have 4 portable units "waiting for me in France" (http://forums.sonyin...r-me-in-france/). I didn't come back yet but 3 of them has been sold in good order condition. Except the MZ-RH1 which has writing and sometimes reading problems only with Hi-MD discs. But as I have a MZ-RH1 here with no such problems but a little bit ugly, I will share spare parts between them. Here in Vietnam, as Pham Cu (phamcu on this forum) is able to repair any deck, I am a happy guy. He worked (for free) also on one of my portable unit, my MZ-NH900 but finally problems came back. That unit is my main problem since my grey MZ-RH1 has found now a black brother.

Send a PM to phamcu (http://forums.sonyin.../121057-phamcu/), maybe we will be also interested with your units and would accept a deal. See his web page (Google Translator for an approximative translation) : http://www.5giay.vn/...d.php?t=3360572
