paperclip
I can't seem to find anything new that has specs even close to some of the mid-late 90's Sony decks and I'd like to get one to use for listening and recording to MD. I prefer a Sony ES model but am open minded. I'd even take a DVD player that can output 44.1 khz, instead of resampling to 48 khz. Toslink output is a must, coax would be nice too. I've been looking at Sony's new CE500 and it's looks like a great unit but dynamic range is in the mid 80's and I think I'd be cheating my MD recorders. Decks I like so far doing research are all Sony's: CDP-C89ES, CDP-CA70ES, but I'm pretty sure they do not read CD-RW. If anyone can help with their observations I'll be grateful

My DVP-CX995V has specs which easily beat the above - HDMI, Toslink and coax, and will play CD's and DVD's both (as well as the steadily vanishing SA-CD). Yes it really does output 44.1 from CD's, no problem at all. If you want something new, my guess is the current blu-ray version of this beast called BDP-CX960. If you want something older, probably the DVP-CX985V may do just fine for you. By the way, these all hold 400 disks. I think the latest one even plays MP3 DVD's though the earlier ones including mine can play MP3 CD's. NONE of them play AtracCD though. Onkyo's latest CD player is the C-7030, perhaps a notch below the other two, but still looks very good and it is fairly inexpensive.

Hmmm, I recall someone telling me that Dynamic Range of CD (44.1kHz 1411 kbps) is limited by mathematics to 96dB. The 995V certainly claims 99dB in the specs. I wonder how this is possible? paperclip
Does anyone ahve experience with DVD Audio? I was thinking of getting a couple to try out but have no experience with the format. Sounds like most are going with a DVD player now and that's ok by me. I don't really have space for a Mega changer. Maybe I will try the CE500 just because it can do USB drives? I am curious if anyone is using Control AI and if it can put CD-TEXT onto a MD? Chickenvenus
I use a Sony CE595, this plays CD and SACD. It has digital out for the CD layer, and takes 5 discs. I prefer to keep sound and vision separate, and in different rooms. It won't play DVD-A though. I play these via an iMac, that is plugged into my music system. Good if you are into surround sound, like I am. There are loads of great CD players out there though.
sfbp
I don't really have space for a Mega changer. They're not THAT big. Amazing way to file stuff, too. I used to have a CDP-CE375 and I saw one on Craigslist a week ago for $20. Optical out, D/R quoted as 93dB which is close enough, I think. paperclip
I'm leaning towards the CDP-CX355, it's the only thing left with Control A1 anymore. I'm curious if anyone has given one of these a listen and give me their impressions?
bluecrab
Your dead right Stephen - check out paragraph three here: http://www.cdmasteringservices.com/dynamicrange.htm Jim SACD can have a dynamic range up to 120 dB, it looks like. That's all well and good, but it does not explain the dynamic ranges > 96 dB listed for many non-SACD players by their manufacturers. Where are they getting these numbers? I'm curious if anyone has given one of these a listen and give me their impressions? Glad you are now considering a carousel. Mine has been really quite reliable, and handles CD-Text correctly when I burn it with Nero. You might want to consider one of the DVD players BEFORE the CX985V, all of which seem to include S-link. Check the specs, the following all are included in the list: DVP-777ES DVP-850D DVP-860 DVP-870D DVP-875D (look at the first of these http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DVPCX777ES) since this is the most likely bet. This beauty also plays MP3 CD's. I seem to recall that this one is regarded as the gold standard by the AV buffs. They all have control-S/Slink/ControlA1 (see the article here for explanations) Here's an auction on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-DVP-CX777ES-400-Disk-Player-Changer-/150653305047 (it has no remote, but there are 12 other auctions too, assuming you are in the USA). I know that less is more (ie why get DVD capability when you only want CDs) but the ability to play other things, and heck! it just makes a great way to store and index things. And I can assure you that its successor (my 995V), at least, does output Fs 44.1kHz so it's a pretty good bet that Sony wouldn't stumble in that regard. About the only thing this one (777ES) doesn't have is HDMI, but from my experiences, I am quite lukewarm to HDMI for many reasons. Good luck! Stephen. Oh yes, I almost forgot, one of the things you get in the ES series is the RS-232 interface which essentially understands SLink. The same AV buffs want that (that's why this unit is so popular) to control the thing in some central fashion from a PC.
