Help with older Sonic Stage

i have SS on a few computers, one of which has 3.4 using Win98 and is not internet capable. This machine has music on it i would like to retrieve but somehow the program is corrupted.

i can't seem to find a copy of SS that will run on Windows 98. i am not over literate with this software and, as i understand it, if i simply copy the music files to another computer with SS the files will be rendered unusable.

Would anyone have a suggestion as to how i can retrieve the music from this machine!?

The linux-minidisc project will have code that can access the encrypted files, soon. Currently it does not. Unless you can install a newer version of Sonic Stage you are presently out of luck.

Try the "Ultimate" 4.3 from our downloads section. I can't remember if anyone has tried it (4.3) with Win98. If you have several machines, perhaps you can try on some OTHER machine first before you attack the busted one. It should provide a clean upgrade path.

Once you have 4.3 working on a given machine, you'd better decrypt the files, which is possible with the File Conversion Tool provided by Sony - but (likely) only on the original machine the files were protected on. Whatever you do, no System Restore or messing with the registry, or reinstalling Windows, until you did this step. If you reinstalled Windows already, you may have to wait for the l-m-p to finish their work; there is a version of VLC that gets around this problem but it apparently only works in the hands of the authors of the code (not a good sign). That one may be solved as soon as today, so your timing may be perfect. I have no clue if VLC even runs on Win98, since it targets a lot of technology that effectively didn't exist in 1998, like DVD's and compressed movies. But I'll leave the problem of how to get the files off that machine, to you....

Thank-you for the lightening fast reply.

Sounds like i am out of luck as i do not know anything about linux or much else about the workings of SS. Used it only with my mini-disc for live hiome recordings and sound effects. Was hoping someone perhaps had/could steer me to an older version that both ran on Win98 and did not ask for on-line authentication, as i believe the older ones did? Have not yet tried the Ultimate but my gut feeling is that it will not work on Win98. Will give it a shot though.

Anyway, thanks again!

Exactly where did it crash? Full message and/or screen shot please.

i do not have screen capture software on the computer. It crashed during the installation process. After receiving confirmation checks for about half the components, it stopped with a ~4"x4" frame containing:

CANCEL

Installation process for SonicStage 4.3 has been terminated.

{2051 . 2069}

DONE

Hope this helps and i very much appreciate your assistance. There are files on this machine that would be very useful to me, so it would be great if i could access them somehow.

i had a look at the addendum link. It seems it might be a bit over my head. Perhaps i will be able to make some sense of it over time. If it makes any difference, some of my files were made on standard discs but most were HiMD on RH1 and RH10; the majority on the latter as i found the larger scrolling display easier to work with, especially in low light.

My wife had a copy of Windows ME and i'm wondering if replacing W98 with it as a last resort might work with some other version SS that does not require internet connection to operate. But i will hold off on that for a while.

Anyway, perhaps there is still hope.

Thank-you again.

Thomas.

Couple of things, somewhat at random and not in the order you asked about:

1. If you replace Windows you will run into exactly the problem I described, on that machine. Don't.

2. To get around even a change in registry, you will need connex to net, if you messed it up. So this (installing version that for machine with no internet connx) solves nothing. The only OFFICIAL way to get your DRM back is from Sony's server.

3. Currently HiMD uploaded files are not reclaimable by the mentioned technique. Probably they will become so. Maybe a few months, I don't know.

Hang in there. But if you've installed or reinstalled Windows, probably you can't get the files at the moment.

Haven't changed Windows.

Guess i will have to wait it out and see.

In the mean time, thanks again. Greatly appreciate the effort.

Cheers,
