ronald11
My recorder works normally, sort of. I can record tracks on my Sony JE 510, but when I finish recording I get a "blank disc" message when I want play the tracks I just recorded. However, if I put a disc in that I recorded earlier, it plays back normally. This problem just started today, any discs recorded prior to today play normal, so I'm guessing that even tho it is indicating it is recording, it must not be recording? Any hints of what could be going on here, before I take it to the shop.
sfbp
Overwrite head is bust. You should be able to get something as good or better on Ebay for less than the cost of fixing.
A_radio
I am having a similar issue with a Sony MZ N707 that I just bought off ebay...It looked like it was recording, sounded like it was recording, indicated that it was changing the TOC....but then showed blank disc, and nothing was there. Wondering if there's an easy fix for this... thanks.
sfbp
Nope. The 707 appears to be one of the top contenders for "most failed overwrite heads", too. You need to find someone willing to fix it, and I think it's not completely unreasonable to send to Jim (Hoggarth) in England, as he offers a repair service for just such a problem. Or buy something else and keep the one you have for spares. If you are within a reasonable time (I forget the statutory limits on Ebay) this is the vendor's problem, not yours. jim.hoggarth
Almost definitely the overwrite head. Although the same head is used in many different models, the N707 (and N1, and R700) seem particularly prone to this. Still, an easy fix. Are you in the UK? If so I can do the repair for you quickly and at reasonable cost. Even if you are out of the UK it could still be worth your while getting it repaired. But certainly see about getting a refund from the seller first, especially if they claimed it was a working machine in the auction listing. A_radio
Hmm...thanks. I already complained to the seller about a corroded battery casing on a separate R-70. lol. At the time, I figured the 707 worked just fine since I had seen the TOC change pop up. I must not have played it back right, or I suppose it's possible that the device died between testing it and using it. I know we replaced a screw on the 707...there's no off chance that could have done something to it, could it have? I had an engineer clean up the battery casing on the 70....and I think it works just fine, but we'll see, I guess. *grumble* Thanks for the input. No repair folks on this side of the pond? Thanks Jim--I may take you up on that. I am exploring options, but I may take you up on that.
