How do I record non Hi-MD on MZ-M100

I have an MDX-C7900 deck in my old Alfa Romeo and it's the only thing I use MD's for anymore these days but to make new discs for it they have to be standard (non Hi-MD) and I haven't been able to figure out how to do that with my MZ-M100. I'm still able to do it with a very old MZ-R35 that I have but the LCD screen is out and it's kind of a hassle.

Is there a way to do it on the M100 or will I have to look for a different model?

There are two ways:

1. Hack the Firmware (there's a post I will find for you if you really want to do this)

2. Use Sonic Stage to transfer songs (USB). There's a way to generate SP disks with SonicStage. This presupposes you have a PC and a bit of knowledge - I assume the M100 came with the right USB cable.

Let us know which of these methods you can definitely rule out, and we will try to help with the other.

Note: Method 1 means you lose MP3 facilities on the M100. Is your N707 busted? Maybe that would work better.

Sonic stage would be best, I have it installed and have the cable. I've also got experience with it so if the capability is in there I could probably figure it out but some guidance would be appreciated.

I don't have an N707 anymore but do have an old R35 however the LCD is shot so although I can do line recordings I can't set the levels or anything else.

Thanks for the help

A slight warning though - the trouble with creating SP discs using sonicstage is that you'll only get (at best) an LP2 quality recording. That's because SS can't actually handle the SP codec and first transcodes from the SS library to the next best thing (in NetMD terms), ie. LP2. So though your SS-SP disc will be fully compatible with your deck you might feel (rightly) cheated in terms of the quality of your disc. It also takes forever to create the SP discs, not much faster than real time if at all. Sorry to put a fly in the ointment...

After my experiments with LP4 (66kbps), I have veered to the conclusion that 132kbps is pretty good if properly mastered and reproduced. In fact the satellite radio services say "Near CD quality" when talking about 128kbps streams. Admittedly this is probably more like Atrac3+ than Atrac3, but all the same, it's not a hugely disputatious position to say that LP2 is "good enough". For a car, too....
