Does charger quality matter with these gumstick batteries?

I'm using a few Sony units that use the NH-14WM and newer clone gumstick batteries.

I've been recharging them with the original chargers. 

I have heard that newer chargers exist - should I be using those?

Take the time to read through the following thread. You want the BC700, probably.

There is also a charger sold with Gold Peak (GP) 14WM-equivalents known as the Power Bank. It's quite reliable and the only caveat is: get the right one for your mains supply. Unlike many chargers there is a 240V version and a 120V version.
