md optical out vs analogue

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I have live recordings from a portable md (no optical out) in lp2 and lp4 mode.

I want to do the best transfer to a digital sound studio to edit the tracks.

Would an optical out be much better than using the headphone analogue out for the transfer?

Where can i find an md player with optical out and lp2/4 mode? Or is there a better way for best quality

I know this is basic stuff to experienced users and i have just started reading the forum.

Mine is an MDLP  model MZ-G750.

it seems there are 3 levels of sound quality

1. analogue via headphones out (i've tried it...ok)

2. optical (i need a deck with optical out and can play lp2/4)

3. best quality digital with usb using MZ-RH1 (probably imperceptible difference)

So optical seems most practical way to go...please advise.....what machines can do this? any available?

Hi

I suggest you don't use the analogue output from the MZ-G750 as you won't get a flat frequency response. Sony portables give a small amount of bass boost even with the bass boost switched off. It's only a couple of db but enough to be noticeable. A few years back I did some accurate tests which proved this.

Incidentally Sharp and Panasonic portables however do give a flat response. This in turn gives a slightly clearer mid range but a less warm sound (IMO).

As to what decks have an optical output and are LP compatible I have no idea so somebody else will have to answer that for you.

Cheers

There are lots of decks with optical out, just make sure you get one with MDLP. anything starting with 4 or 7, some with 6 or 9. Check back with us, or at http://minidisc.org/equipment_browser.html

Alternatively you can buy, rent or borrow an MZ-RH1. If there's only a few MDs, some kind soul might even offer to transcribe (upload) them for you. You cannot improve on that, as LP is uploaded bit-for-bit to a computer.
