BigI
Hello all! I recently bought a good condition 940 from an elderly chap, who very kindly halved the price because when we turned it on after it being in storage for some time, the discs wouldn’t eject. Otherwise looked quite well looked after. We did try a disc and it loaded up and played fine (although I didn’t leave it to play for a long time). a new belt later and all seemed good - I had a c13 error initially, but then all was ok. Or so I thought…..! fast forward a week and installing in my Hi-Fi rack t9 replace my 930, gave it a thorough clean and added a small amount of synthetic silicone grease to the laser sled and gears and the loader teeth. Installed in rack and all seemed good…for about 2 minutes. Then it started to skip and sound very much like a cd player does when the laser power is turned down - distorted and jumpy. After about a minute it started playing ok again. Next track, the same thing but ata inferential time. Thinking it was the disc I tried another, and another. All the same, skipping at random points on the disc. Some struggled to read the toc even and most took quite a while to read the toc. All these discs perform faultless in my 930 and mzrh1. I’ve cleaned the lens and checked no excess grease was anywhere, even tried playing upside down but still the same. It seems to get worse the longer the drive is in use oddly. I don’t have access to a laser power meter, but have access to multimeters/scopes etc (but no laser power meter) and not afraid to get stuck in! Can anyone provide any pointers or advice? Oddly I checked the pb and rec hours in the service menu and they were 2 and 1h respectively- I suspect the battery has died with non use, not sure if it’s worth replacing. many thanks all! BearBoy
Is it worth reseating the ribbon cables, if you've not done so already? Doesn't sound like the usual symptoms for something amiss with the cables but probably worth a try.
